“Rifle team,” my foot! What in the world are they doing with their left hands? It looks like Obama holding a rifle.

The last comment on that page is:

“When my girlfriend and I competed in a John Garand match using M1 rifles last year, that’s basically how they taught us to hold them while we were doing the offhand standing position at 200 yards. It was fairly lightly balanced on the left hand while snugged up against the right armpit.”

Don’t know, perhaps that was a common stance/pose for the sport at the time?

I worked with a guy in NC who would be around 70 now who told me that when he went to high school there, he HAD to take a gun to school, it was required equipment for phys ed. And never an incident or accident.

It’s just a formal pose, for show. I’m sure they didn’t hold their rifles that way when they were firing.

It looks like Obama holding a rifle.

No, Obama would be beshatting himself in such close proximity to a dreaded "gun".

I don’t know about rifles, but the standard stance for pistol and revolver shooting in FBI classes in the 1949’s and 1950’s was one handed, while now it’s two handed. Hence, that could have been the proper rifle stance back then.

That is the proper stance for the standing position in match shooting.

I saw a rangemaster use a “grip” somewhat like that for demonstration purposes a while back. He also showed us a grip with the gun resting on his fist with the thumb and forefinger up.

I did learn that we’re a lot more safety conscious than we were 100 years ago. He ran down a considerable list of people famous gunslingers accidentally shot or managed to shoot themselves.

Good eye!

This wasnt far removed from an era when shooting was a common sport in the US. Its sad to see what we’ve become. I dare say those girls in the pic have more backbone & grit than many of today’s ‘men’.

High school girls in Wash DC with guns? By today’s standards, that’s totally unAmerican.

The rifles look like Springfield 1903s, which if I remember correctly, shot the 30.06 round. A round powerful enough to take any big game in North America.

No air rifles or .22 for these young ladies. We were once made of sterner stuff in this country.
