Thanks to "Game of Thrones," television just can't get enough of the Middle Ages. Those flickering smoky interiors, enormous woolly coats and bloody, ax-heavy battles; the remarkable décolletage, the picaresque foliage and mud. Sometimes there's magic, sometimes there isn't, but, by gosh, there's always plenty of bloody hacking and mud.
Certainly "The Last Kingdom," the BBC drama that premieres Saturday and is based on the first book of Bernard Cornwell's "Saxon Tales," checks all these boxes in short order.
Don't let the exposition-heavy first episode fool you; this may be a sword 'n' longboat epic with a handsome hero at its heart, but as adapted by Stephen Butchard, it subtly grows more complex with each passing hour until that hero becomes, to a certain extent, a supporting player in the far more dramatic epic of history.

Actually Cox’s character Brida is described as looking a lot like Cox in the book, thin with raven black hair. Uhtred OTOH is described as blonde, making it easy to pass himself off as a Dane, as all the Vikings are called by the Saxons regardless of where they come from. I can overlook that though.
FX’s The Bastard Executioner dragged through the first episode, but has improved since then.
It is worth watching.

I hope it is not as lame as the Bastard Executioner.
I wish there was a survival series like Jericho again.
Saw I Claudius twice. It still holds up. Excellent writing and performance. And the mother was an outstanding actress. She should have had more meaty roles.
Oh! Now we see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help, I'm being repressed!'
I think everybody learn their history from Monty Pyhton LOL!
OHHH I been watching that that awesome show first episode drag “now the action is picking up”
Well I know we’ll see Ivar’s brother Ubba this season. Never fight Ubba.
I have read the series twice, too. There is a new one. Oh joy.
Title please.
I tried. I really tried to watch it. Just gave up on it.
It is “Warriors of the Storm”-it was just released-I got it at Amazon UK, so I don’t know if it is available at US outlets yet.
I hate the way first episodes are used to set up the plot-in last night’s, many chapters of the first book were compressed into just over an hour of time-enough details to require taking notes, but I enjoyed it all the same.
The next episodes likely won’t be so chaotic on the details, but all the books are full of plots, subplots, treachery and intrigue involving the families of King Alfred, Uhtred and most of their noble kin-it resembles a good murder mystery or tale of espionage...
Nope not yet. I checked on my kindle. Thanks for the new title. I’ll keep an eye out.
Look pretty good I like it start it slow I like it
I Can’t wait until Alfred the Great show up
And Ultred start become more bad you know what soldier
binge watched through the end of season 3.
imho good binge watching.
Mine too, might tie with LONESOME DOVE for best TV mini ever. Have not got into some of these latest offerings so might give this a try.
This topic was posted , thanks Hugin.
I’d love to see Ken Follet’s “The Evening and the Morning” turned into a series.
Sorry, if there isn’t an interracial LGBT romantic storyline, I am going to have to pass.
