Review BBC's 'Last Kingdom' brings complexity and personality to the Middle Ages
LA TImes ^ | 10/09/15 | Mary McNamara

Thanks to "Game of Thrones," television just can't get enough of the Middle Ages. Those flickering smoky interiors, enormous woolly coats and bloody, ax-heavy battles; the remarkable décolletage, the picaresque foliage and mud. Sometimes there's magic, sometimes there isn't, but, by gosh, there's always plenty of bloody hacking and mud.

Certainly "The Last Kingdom," the BBC drama that premieres Saturday and is based on the first book of Bernard Cornwell's "Saxon Tales," checks all these boxes in short order.

Don't let the exposition-heavy first episode fool you; this may be a sword 'n' longboat epic with a handsome hero at its heart, but as adapted by Stephen Butchard, it subtly grows more complex with each passing hour until that hero becomes, to a certain extent, a supporting player in the far more dramatic epic of history.

You’re all crazy for our British dramas and period-costume things.

I bet you all love “Downton Abbey”. You know I’ve never watched that myself!

Personally, I do!......I have collected many of them.

But we Yanks can turn out some great drama too!...
I am enjoying TURN......about our American Revolution (you guys are mentioned in there, too :)
TURN is excellent....fleshes out the characters we know mostly from our history books....without compromising integrity.

I liked the Poirot mysteries with David Suchet, set in the 1930s.

If they follow the books, Uhtred will be portrayed as one badass but pragmatic hero with a very sarcastic sense of humor.

I will be watching-I love Cornwell’s books, and wouldn’t miss it-I have all the books in that series, and have read each one at least twice-and I just ordered the newest one from Amazon UK last week...

You could see him as a boy right now in History Channel version of Vikings

I will hold my breath until there’s a mention of St. Thomas Aquinas. The Middle Ages rule!

Looking forward to Dr. Who.

I really like Capaldi. Reminds me of the 3rd Doctor.

Recently, I gave in and watched the revamped Poldark. I liked it a lot. Somewhere I have the 1970s version.

I like them too.

I think it was set in the 1920s.

The new series is set in the 1950s. I haven't seen it.

I will try the new ones but the campy originals are fun despite Tuppence’s silly hats.

They tried make The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin but it could never match the original with Leonard Rossiter. There is only one C.J.

Never seen Downton Abbey. But I'm a huge Cornwell fan. I really like Vikings (History Channel) too.

As for other BBC series I haven't seen too many, but I did watch Copper on Netflix last year and liked it a lot.
