Getting bored with Netflix and thinking of getting a Sling TV account.
Any advice/reviews from FReepers using the service is appreciated.

My cable bill (plus internet) jumped up to $200/mo so I am looking at ways to get out once football season ends. There are several streaming options I am considering but I am a news and sports consumer and really have little interest in movies and network tv shows.
I **have not tried** any of these services but three of greatest interest are:
1) Sling TV. They have a contract with ESPN and the Turner channels to give you some live sports. $20/mo, $25 if you want any of the bonus packages but I like most of their bundling. Unfortunately, no local channels and no regional sports channels or Fox Sports channels. They have a special deal with Roku where you can get the stick for free or the Roku 3 for half price.
2) Playstation Vue which is subscribed through Sony Playstation and, for $49.95/mo, gives you local stations and a broad assortment of standard cable channels but, alas, it is only available presently in a few major cities. They hope to add other cities as they grow.
3) Amazon Fire ($99 one time cost) gives you fewer “channels” than Roku but access to a wide assortment of their movie and music catalog through Amazon Prime. You can also stream Sling TV through this.
I’m hoping for something that would allow me to 1) watch and record live sporting events, 2) play back to a DVD recorder and 3) provides access to a number of streaming services. The start-up costs could run a couple of hundred dollars but if you can get the monthly bill under $50/mo, you still save money in the long run.
I am in the United States. They advertise as allowing overseas people to get US Tv but it doesn’t matter where you live.
I too have DirecTV and TWC internet, but no phone. Netflix is a consideration though.
The Sling Box is not related to Sling TV. Dish Networks parent company Echostar makes both devices. The Box is to see your TV service out of the house. The Internet website service is to stream cable from your internet connection with fewer channels and lower cost.
I now have Comcast Xfinity which allows viewing of a lot of entertainment. Also many networks have apps for living viewing of some shows.
I Binged, and found www.classicflix.com .
Has a ton of stuff Netflix doesn’t have.
I cut my cable years ago...
I get everything I need through the internet, even some football and racing at times when there is something I really want to watch.
But frankly, sports is about the only thing that is still controlled by the MSM, and they are not likely to turn loose of it any time soon, but in the end they will have to..

I have a Roku and love it.
It depends on your internet speed, but mine is clear. Most folks shouldn’t have a problem. I have the next to slowest package from TWCable.
I have a Roku on all my TVs.
Sling TV and Netflix.
I also have a Tablo box. With that system, you plug in your over the air antenna to the the Tablo, which plugs into your router. This streams all of your local channels in HD to all of your Rokus. You can also plug an external hard drive into the Tablo and it will function as a DVR. It includes a guide and everything.
With this setup, I have everything I could want integrated through my Roku. My only monthly fees are for Sling and Netflix.

Hook your computer, ipad, whatever up to your tv and don’t pay for anything.

There are other streaming websites out there that do the same thing.
I’m a recent streaming person. Never had cable. Some things I’ve learned:
Virtually everything you could ever want is streamed for free or cheap. Roku has access to more channels than you can shake a stick at.
Local programming is available from Roku. Check out the channels which are legion, there are also “private” channels which are not advertised but accessible. Need to google those. Nowhere TV is a private channel with good content.
Almost all content providers, e.g. NASCAR offer some sort of streaming option ala carte.
YIP TV offers OANN and a few sport channels for free. Need to stream to laptop or tv directly.
If you go to a website and they offer streaming of current movies releases that are still in the theater, then you know you're in shaky territory. No matter what we might think of Hollywood or the mainstream media, there are some of us that still think it's wrong to steal from them.
In other words, are you willing to part with your integrity for some free TV?
I just signed up for it this morning so I can watch the upcoming baseball playoffs telecast by espn and tbs.
they’re offering a 7 day free trial before they bill your credit card for it @ $20 a month but I plan on canceling it as soon as baseball is over.
I’m using my roku to access it but there are several different apps to use it.
If I planned on keeping it, it’s not a bad deal for $20 a mo. as they offer quite a few channels.
I just purchased the Amazon Fire Stick for $29.95 ($39.95 regular) but there is the Prime subscription also which is $99/yr.
I use the app in my ROKU. Just $20 a month plus internet service gets you most the cable channels you will watch. For $15 a month more you can get HBO (I do not) and $5 gets you some Disney channels. ROKU already has Disney. Use the over the air antenna to get local channels and you are not missing much except the higher cost of cable tv.
