An 800 ft. cargo vessel sailing from Jacksonville to San Juan in the vicinity of a major hurricane with 33 crew on board loses power, starts listing, sends a distress signal and goes missing now for four days. Drudge has a link to the story just as a side of other hurricane stories. The story goes largely ignored by the mainstream media. Even Free Republic has taken it down from Breaking and Front Page news.
That's 33 souls, 28 of which are Americans, possibly lost at sea or struggling to survive. A major U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue effort is underway right now, and the incident is barely registering.
Why the blackout? Can the Trump and Putin antics really overshadow a major real-life survival or disaster news item, as it is happening?
I am not one for conspiracy theories, but isn't it the lack of real, factual information which fuels "alternate news" sources?
Or do people, including FR, do no just care and if it's not about politicians and "celebrities", it does not exist?

We’re talking about possible loss of life. That always attracts the msm (except when loss of life is the unborn).
Also this is apparently a bona fide mystery, and a mystery is what often attracts viewers, to speak to your suggestion.

There was a story a couple of years ago about a replica tall ship that was lost at sea, near the carolinas, because they decided to sail during another hurricane. Several people lost their lives.
Just a guess: Did the Capt. think he could ride out the storm by getting behind Long Island or Crooked and Atkins ahead of the storm and pretty much stay on schedule. He guessed wrong!
Now I see post 15 says that fox news gave a ‘detailed’ report yesterday.
Therefore there is no media blackout, as was first assumed, and our discussion is moot.
I am just guessing.
That was the replica HMS Bounty from the 1962 film with Marlo Brando.
Her engine was inop, she was under sail and hove into a storm. Without power Bounty could not be brought into the wind and she foundered. Heartbreaking pics of her mast tops as she disappeared.

As for the Faro, I see container ships entering Savannah harbor & for the life of me can’t comprehend how they don’t capsize with all those containers stacked to the sky on deck.
I made 6 crossings of the Pacific before I was 13 years old. The ships were from MSTS. I know that dates me.

Yes, it is amazing to see the amount of cargo stacked topside. But there are many Youtube videos of ships listing and cargo slipping, in storms.
There are reports that El Faro lit off its EPIRB, but it went silent after only a few minutes.
There should have been some EPIRBs in “float-free” mounts, outside.
But if the ship rolled and sank, they might have all gone down with her.
An EPIRB pinger can’t transmit through deep ocean water.

LOL! Yes, I was somewhat surprised.
No, but usually during a major disaster there’s usually extended coverage, frequently with insightful information, especially here in FR. I have not seen much of that in this case.
And that is my point. Most people seem to operate in a mob mentality. If a story isn’t stirred up by the MSM, then it doesn’t exist. Witness how they flamed and then buried the ebola crisis, for example.
And that’s the point of this thread. What constitutes a news item that’s worthy of our attention? Only what the MSN can get up in a frenzy, or as in this case, a real life, ongoing survival story?
Obviously now, the answer is the later.

There was loss of life, and one of them was a descendant of Fletcher Christian. It was hurricane Sandy.

The deceased Captain is always blamed. From a lifetime of reading about the maritime life, and having worked shoreside vessel operations for many, many years communicating with many a vessel Captain I can say with certainty that it’s been this way for as long as there has been commercial shipping. It’s always the Captain’s fault.

Another Captain will take a hit IF his vessel hits them.
The owners of the vessel in discussion will get a check from the insurer, and as they see it all will be well, and as it should be. Matter closed.
When a ship is lost it is a ship that is lost. The crew, the cargo usually worth more than the ship is all rolled into “the ship”. The ship owners are reimbursed by the insurer, the shipper’s are reimbursed, and IF the crew members had insurance their beneficiary is reimbursed. It’s an International industry, and much depends on the flag of registry.
Bottom line is everything, and the bottom line here is it’s a cold, cruel industry one should be wary of falling into the old Romance of the Sea bit.
