A major maritime disaster is underway in the Atlantic and it is subject to a media blackout?

An 800 ft. cargo vessel sailing from Jacksonville to San Juan in the vicinity of a major hurricane with 33 crew on board loses power, starts listing, sends a distress signal and goes missing now for four days. Drudge has a link to the story just as a side of other hurricane stories. The story goes largely ignored by the mainstream media. Even Free Republic has taken it down from Breaking and Front Page news.

That's 33 souls, 28 of which are Americans, possibly lost at sea or struggling to survive. A major U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue effort is underway right now, and the incident is barely registering.

Why the blackout? Can the Trump and Putin antics really overshadow a major real-life survival or disaster news item, as it is happening?

I am not one for conspiracy theories, but isn't it the lack of real, factual information which fuels "alternate news" sources?

Or do people, including FR, do no just care and if it's not about politicians and "celebrities", it does not exist?

33 souls missing at sea. A drunk falling of a cruise ship gets more press than this!

200’ drop... went there for the drop, stayed the entire 4 minutes to listen to the Stones. There are only so many angles and speeds you can show a launch hitting the water... ;-)

What I have been wondering is I knew that a tropical weather system came off the African coast several weeks ago, and I am in my den in Houston. They are in the Atlantic and yet they went right into the path of the building storm. We’re they not paying attention?

The liberates are searching for a means to link climate change with the sinking.

Liberals believe that hurricanes are a result of climate change, so there's your link right there. (Never mind that hurricanes have occurred since the dawn of time.)

No, the real “news” on the major and cable news networks is as follows:

1 - Pope Francis’ position today (as opposed to yesterday and the preceding days) on gays as priests and gay marriage;

2 - whether Kim the county clerk had a personal meeting with Pope Francis, an audience with Pope Francis or was just part of the crowd of one million joining the Pope in Philadelphia;

3 - what a great and comical performance Hillary Clinton turned in last nite on SNL which should put to rest all the supposed “news” about the minor email flap;

4 - how Donald Trump continues to sink in the polls;

5 - whatever the Kardashians are doing today.

“What more is there to say?”

Well, when the Malaysian airliner went missing, CNN and others covered and speculated 24/7 for weeks. When the commuter ferry crashed in Staten Island, NY, the media was on top of it for days as well.

Everything else gets at least one day of intense coverage unless, of course, discovery would harm some one or some group in the politically correct class.

For example, when a train in NJ went off the rails from going at a high rate of speed, it was all news and speculation until we learned the trainman was homosexual. Then - nothing.

The list of things the media will not report is long, as is the list of things they will not let go.

I total blackout by everyone sure smacks of conspiracy. The question is: why, and who gave the order?

I read “listing 15*” before losing engine power to rolling 60* one way and 30 degrees the other, once they were adrift beam to the seas.

Then the roll increases, until they keel over, and sink.

They will find the ship on the bottom, probably turtled.

200’ drop was pushing the limits. 50’ drops are standard and routine. Maersk Alabama, etc.

From First Coast News:

El Faro has 391 containers topside and 294 cars, trucks and trailers below deck. The Coast Guard said that cargo makes the listing problems worse at sea.

There have been many things that could be considered only ‘a local concern’, but ended up on national TV.

I can think of a couple of private plane crashes with only the pilot or just one additional person that did not impact the nation at large, but was still covered.

It is rare, very rare, that no one sees fit to mention it (assuming that is accurate) at all.

Re: Black lives matter:

Seems like many of the ship’s families being interviewed are black.

“I wonder why they put to sea given the weather. Seems like the nautical equivalent of running with scissors— you’re basically playing the odds.”

Because the ships owner insisted the Captain put to sea. It’s all about the bottom line in that business. Sitting in port costs money. Lots of money. The ships are insured, and the little people on board the ships are unknown, faceless souls of little consequence to the bottom line.

Put to sea, or we’ll get a Captain that will is usually how it goes. A Captain that doesn’t obey the owner’s wishes in an industry such as that will never have another ship under his feet again. The owner’s will make certain of that.

Finding 3 life rings and an empty life preserver does not seem like a good sign but the families keep saying they think it is a good sign.

Even Free Republic has taken it down from Breaking and Front Page news.

You yourself requested that your breaking news post be taken down in favor of a post on this story made prior to yours. Sheez...

When the Edmund Fitzgerald first went missing, Captain Cooper of the Arthur Anderson couldn’t get Soo Control, the Coast Guard connected group in charge of overseeing all boats on the Great Lakes, to even listen to his report. Soo Control was focused on locating a 14 or 16 ft (can’t remember which) fishing boat that was missing. (The crew of the small boat, it later turned out, was sheltering on an island.)

The third time Cooper called Soo Control, he shouted in his loudest voice that the Fitz was missing. Soo Control finally paid attention.
