A nation of tall cheese-eaters
BBC ^ | September 29, 2015 | Ben Coates

The Dutch drink a lot of milk, eat a lot of cheese, and are now the tallest people in the world. Could there be a connection? The author of a new book on the Netherlands, Ben Coates, explains how the Dutch became not only voracious but also very discerning cheese eaters.

So France is not the cheese capital of the world?

They haven’t become - they have always been.

I’m 5’11” and when I travel to the Netherlands, I feel like a midget.

Edam, Gouda are really good cheeses. My brother-in-law, now deceased, used to bring us a wheel of Gouda and Edam when he visited. I would put some in my mouth, taste it and swoon.(Yes, while unconscious my left leg would twitch.) Smooth, creamy I can still taste it.

Not always. I read that they were average or below average height only a few generations ago.

Exactly, I have used that fact in trivia questions for years.

Most people think of an African nation being the tallest when it is the Dutch, Course now all the third world immigrants are getting there watch their height fact decrease.

Since milk is nature’s food for young animals I imagine it has many growth factors in it.

The Masai. They traditionally lived on beef, milk, and cattle blood.

Oh yeah?

What about mice?

Mice eat cheese all the time and look at how tall they get.

If eating cheese makes you tall, then mice would be like six feet tall.

All those Tom And Jerry cartoons would be about Jerry chasing Tom around.

I rest my case.

It was getting heavy anyway.

What’s striking is how tall many of the women are. But I’m surprised Lithuania doesn’t take the title. That place really does feel like Land of the Giants.

I have Dutch friends, their whole family is HUGE! Even the women are 6 ft tall. I never saw them drink milk or eat much cheese.

It’s natural selection. The shorter people drowned.
The tall ones could keep their heads above water.

I don’t know if it milk and cheese makes you grow tall. I am a life long milk and cheese eater. We had a cow when I was a child and I drank milk instead of water. I am 5 ft 3 in, it didn’t work for me.

***Gouda are really good cheeses.***

My sister’s husband bought some Gouda forty years ago. When he opened it I had to leave the room, so did my sister.

It smelled just like our dad’s dirty, stinky, sweaty feet.

I’m Dutch & Danish on my grandmother’s side. I’m 6’, my brother is 6’6”, and my uncle is 6’8”. Funny thing is, his twin brother is only 5’11”. We all love cheese. And kippered salmon.
