WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD VOLUME 38 SEPTEMBER 18, 2015
freerepublic | September 18, 2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/18/2015 1:12:45 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

what is BHM?

Sorry, that's Backwoods Home Magazine. One of the best - quite possibly THE best - resources around for homesteading and self-sufficiency!

Jackie Clay is one of their writers. She's been homesteading since forever, and has done so in several parts of the country. Since she survives off her gardening and canning, she's pretty much the one to go to for any advice.

We went to Johnny’s house today, Sunday, and took him medicine (huge bottle of No 7, Jack Daniels Black). That takes the place of Morphine sometimes.

He now weighs 130 pounds and it shows. His body looks better than he has since this started back in January.

He is scheduled for a CAT scan and MRI in Oct., to see how he “looks” in his brain and lungs/abdomen. Further treatment will be considered based on those findings.

We had a lot of laughs with him today and we felt really good at his progress even after the chemo last week. It takes about two weeks for him to get back his strength after chemo (and stopping the throwing up part).

He is building a radio controlled glider with a wing span of eight feet!

We know prayers for him, asking for God’s grace to heal him, has helped him get to this point. Please keep him in your prayers as we can’t afford to lose a jewel like him.

Thank you so much for the update.
BTW, I like you being in TX, not moving up north.

A move would take awhile and it’s not certain if we will do that but we would both be better off if family was around to help since we are of an “advanced” age. I am going to start using a cane to give me better balance.

We visited his sister in Penn., and she has fallen and stayed there for three hours until her son-in-law came and found her. I had a talk with her to give her ways to help keep her balance and insisted she carry her cell phone on her all the time so she could call the daughter/son-in-law if she falls again. That was not the first time she has fallen and luckily, so far, she hasn’t broken her hip or arms or legs.

Getting older causes one to make changes to stay safe and healthy. Changes such as these are a bitch. :o)

I just finished laying out the sunflowers to dry. 7 paper grocery bags full! It’s going to be a race to get them dry in time, I’ve already had to cut the rotten spots out of some of them.

My pumpkin vines were dying down, so I harvested my pumpkins. 16 pumpkins, out of 2 vines! Normally with 2 vines, I could expect 3-5 of them.

I wanted to say more but my sleepy meds are kickingg in. Nighty night!!!

Thanks for the update Marcella, always good to hear from someone who ‘has eyes on him’. I noticed he still was posting after the chemo and sounded rather feisty at times. We often wind up on the same threads. Glad you had a safe trip, sounded like a long one. I bet it’s good to be home.

The rain blew away and I took advantage. Spent most of Saturday and most of Sunday moving dirt.

I found my phone line with the loader bucket yesterday while I was cleaning out the core cut. It was 4’ up the backside of the dam 6” below the surface. I had locates done prior to cutting the dam and that’s not where it was flagged. This is the 2nd time the phone line has been cut since we built the house. It was flagged wrong the first time too. I can splice in a new piece of wire myself, but there’s no use doing that until we repack the core.

Dad and I had intended to park the mower and put the moldboard plow on the big tractor yesterday, but he found a thorn on the last mowing job and flattened a front tire, so instead of doing that we set one corner and two brace posts for the fence I’m putting across the back pasture. That’s about all of that business either of us wants in one day. Those osage orange posts are heavy. Tractor tire will get fixed today and we’ll be ready to plow later in the week.

This has been the strangest year for tomatoes. Normally by the middle of September they’re pretty much junk, and most of them are, but the Better Boys and some Brandywines that I planted late are absolutely loaded with nice tomatoes.

I got mine at Walmart at the end of the year sale. It’s a presto brand. It can be used as a water bath canner or pressure canner. I also ordered an extra set of rings etc.

It also has recipes for pressure cooking entrees etc. but is so big that I wouldn’t use it for that unless it was for a church pot luck or something.

I also have the blue granite water bath canner, which I’ve had for years, so I just use it for pressure canning meats and other low acid stuff.

If I was going to use it for fast supper entrees, I’d look for a stainless steel type-something other than aluminum.

We have had some nice days here, and the rain didn’t come this weekend, so our grass is a bit brown, but I’ve been having coffee sitting in a chair on the patio for several days, while watching for the bus and I like that a lot.

Too bad you don’t live closer, I take some off your hands. That’s a darn good amount especially for just 6 plants.

That’s a good plan if the garage isn’t stuffed full - ours is totally stuffed.

Just a little time outdoors is a remarkable tonic, makes me feel great.
