freerepublic | September 11, 2015 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/11/2015 12:39:52 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Good Afternoon Gardeners. This is the Anniversary of a very sad event, and I have paused to reflect and give a prayer for all who lost loved ones on that day and the days since in service to our country. Also a prayer of thanks that we have not suffered another such loss so far-and thanks for our brave men and women who are fighting terrorists and tyranny wherever they may be.

We had some rain early this morning, but the sun is trying to peep out of the clouds this afternoon. We have a nice temperature of 71 degrees. Just the weather Hubby has been waiting for.

He is clearing another patch of brambles and small trees/bushes for yet another garden plot-but also because he wants some more material to feed the chipper.

While the peppers this year are not very large, they are starting to come in. So I have quite a few to process. Yesterday I had just enough tomatoes to make some salsa. Since Hubby can't stand the heat from Jalapeno Peppers, so I used the sweet bells instead. I'll have to add some Jalapeno to mine before I eat it.

Finally got one ripe lemon and am going to have some lemonade this weekend. Still have several others that are green, so there will be more eventually.

This past week, the grocery store actually had some short ribs of beef, and soup bones! First time in over a year. Last time I was in, I complained to all the workers that I ran into about the lack of beef bones of any kind, except for the high priced T-bone and Porterhouse steaks. Can't say that actually had anything to do with it or not, but I was glad to get them even though there was no knuckle bones.

So I bought a whole bunch and am in the process of making my own beef broth, which I will can when it's done. They also had some leg qtrs. of chicken for 29 cents a lb. so I have a bunch of chicken to can too. And it has to be done today, as I have no room in the Refrigerator or Freezer. Packed them in a cooler with ice to hold them while they thawed, and they are ready now! So I'll be going back and forth between the thread and canning today.

Prayers up for Johnny and Arrowhead. Hope everyone has a great weekend. God Bless.

Damn radical muzzies should do gardening instead of jihad —would do them and the world a whole lotta good instead of being the miserable weeds that they are. Got some mustard, mixed color swiss chard and some kale started in seed pods for the Fall planting. Texas summer scorch is on the wane and good riddance.

Promise of rain here in Central TX. Some folks had lots, but it passed us by.
I have cucuzza, squash, tiny cukes, and peppers which, I hope will turn into big cukes and peppers. My sweet potatoes haven’t made any potatoes. I have lots of grape tomatoes, but only had one bobcat tomato as far as slicers.
I haven’t see 29 cent a lb chicken in years, although I did notice a drop in the price of ground chuck at Walmart this am.

14 years ago at this very moment, I was at a ferry terminal in Manhattan, waiting for the boat that would take me to New Jersey and away from the tragedy.

Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggplant and beans are in the ground. The tomatoes are growing slowly which is what I am looking for. Using much less water and moved them from one of my shaded 4x4’s to one where there is more sunlight.

In my shaded 4x4, all the bean plants have broken ground. On Sunday, going to plant a lot of carrots and some more cukes. Basil and parsley died within a week of it going into the ground.

Still debating whether to plant any fruit trees. My soil is primarily clay and it looks like the mojave desert. Planted blueberry and blackberry earlier this year and they died. Would probably have to prep the soil. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

Prayers up.

Almost done with my garden, still a bunch of tomatoes but everything else is about dead, will tear down some of it tonight.

I have apples! First time in 7 years at this house, I have a good looking crop of apples ont he trees, and plan to make and can applesauce next weekend if the parrots don’t get to them first. Yes, we have monk parakeets around my home, they love to strip trees a day before you’re ready to harvest, the little bastids!

Hope everyone else had a safe and productive grdening season.

Condolences to all affected by 9/11. NEVER FORGET!

Careful out there, folks...we have a town official here in soviet Red Hampshire running around telling people that if you grow TOO MANY TOMATOES; you can EXPECT a 'no knock swat raid from the local police'.

NOW they tell me (after surviving one already).

Does anyone else have a nut like this running around loose in YOUR town? Be careful, gardeners.

I have some serrano peppers next to a carolina reaper in the garden. Darndest thing. Some of the peppers on the Serrano look like the Habaneros across the way! I have a plant with both Serranos and Habaneros on the same plant.

Lots of people could do a lot of good by gardening and growing their own food that’s for sure.

Glad to hear the heat has moderated so you can maybe get some good fall crops.

My girl has a blackberry patch in clay soil here in N. Tx. They survive and thrive because its in a low spot that pools water when it rains. On the same plot about 50 yards south she can’t get any fruit trees to survive in that part of the orchard. Have an idea to get a back hoe and dig some mammoth starter tree holes and fill in with dyna dirt. The fruit trees closest to the blackberry patch seem to survive ok. Micro-regional soil issues perhaps as well.

Sorry you missed the rain. Sounds like a nice crop has started at least. Yes, I was quite surprised to see chicken that cheap too.

We are still using the hamburger from the side of beef that we purchased almost a year ago. Only have a few packs of steaks and a couple of roasts left, so it’s time to call and get on the list for the next one.

I used the bones up on those very quickly, hence the search for more bones. Soup in the crock pot starts with a good broth and is a preferred meal in the fall and winter.

Hi all, I did salsa yesterday too greeneyes. Canned 18 pints. It looked so good I took a picture of the bulk salsa in a huge bowl I'll try and post it tonight. I used our shishito and poblano peppers. We like a mildly hot chunky kitchen sink type salsa. As long as I dice everything up fine no one minds a few veggies thrown in.
Flag out today, did a lot of praying and even made it to daily Mass which was well attended at 7:45.

Thanks for the remembrance of 9/11 and prayers it never happens again. Both of our grand children share 9/11 as a birth date but 4 years apart. They are 30 & 27 today. We continue to have Chamber of Commerce weather… Lots and lots of sunshine but the fog is coming in at night and sticking around until 11 am. Lady Bender will be canning lots and lots of Bread & Butter refrigerator pickles tomorrow. She canceled a social event to get em done...

Oh, sorry is missed you. We have .53 Wednesday and then .74 on Thursday and it was very welcome.

I get the 'gittin' ready to go bad' ground at WM early Saturday morning. It actually saves quite a bit.

Not much on the gardening front, some stuff that summered over is finally starting to come back with lots of blooms on the eggplant and such. Not bothering with fall tomatoes; either the spring ones will produce or not.

I had dozed off watching the news, and woke up to hear them discussing the first hit. I was watching on live TV when the second plane hit, and continued to watch the rest of the day. I knew that W would be responding big time. No shooting empty tents with a cruise missile.

Regarding your fruit trees-You would need to improve your soil, and it should be improved for a fairly wide area so that the roots can have good soil to expand/grow.

I read that the reason for many transplant failures was making holes of insufficient area for the trees roots to grow enough for the tree to get truly established.

So the transplant goes well for a while, till the roots reach the end of the improved area and then it dies.

So I think you need to know the typical spread of the tree to be able to have a wide enough diameter of improved soil. However I’m no expert on trees.

Apples. Congrats. We are still waiting for some - been 5 years. We have the dwarf trees, and plan to use nets if we ever get any fruit.
