Hi there! Good to hear from you. Thanks for the link to a great recipe. I was hungry for some BBQ, so decided to try something different.

I marinated them in soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Then drained and patted dry; coated with a dry BBQ rub and put in the crockpot on low - added just a bit of beef broth to keep from sticking. Fell off the bone and tasted great. Had it for lunch.

No, because we are mostly just a bunch of hicks/hillbillies and many people here grow all sorts of tomatoes etc.

I did have a friend that was raided for herbs once, but they were dried. An EMT noticed the packages she had on the table when they came in to load up her husband and take him to the hospital.

When she got to the hospital, the cops were waiting for her, and made her leave and go back to the house. They immediately recognized that it was not that wacky weed and apologized and left.

I barely had enough for 8 jars. So that’s what I did. However, if we like the recipe, I have some tomatoes frozen from last year, and will use some of those to make an additional batch.

I need to get to a farmer’s market in the next town over to get some zukes. I want to pickle some zuke spears as the ones I made last year are all gone, and no one’s zukes turned out well here.

They tell me the Amish in the next town over had some good ones, so I was hoping to get some of those.

That's kind of funny...it was a low-level town employee with a God-complex (most carpetbaggers from Massachusetts have this problem) who looked in my kitchen window, saw bags of TOMATO SEEDS on my dining room table, and it went from there. The stress and shock caused my diabetic wife's pancreas to give out...now I have to watch her stick herself with a needle every night. We got a worthless 'apology', as well.

Forgive me, but I hope ALL involved parties burn in hell.

You are welcome. I think there are a few things that happen now and again that every citizen remembers where they were and what they were doing. Kennedy’s assassination, and 9/11 to name a couple that happened in my lifetime.

At the first report, as I woke up, I was thinking some sort of small King Air or twin engine type plane. Never occurred to me that it would be a commercial flight(even though we had plenty of hijackings 25 or 30 years before)-the memory fades. Then I heard that it was commercial flight and I watched in disbelief as the second one hit. That memory won’t fade.

Yes, social stuff is hard to do sometimes during the canning season. Our children were born 10 years and 5 days apart, so they almost had the same date.

Your sentiments are well understood. Sorry to hear about your wife. My brother’s pancreas also gave out, became diseased, and was ultimately surgically removed. He had a terrible time. Best Wishes for her as she faces this chronic illness.

I was going to make a “plant a terrorist day” comment, but didn’t want to be the first to ruin the thread....

Our okra are going bonkers!!! Is there a way to freeze them whole? I’ve seen them sliced and frozen in the store, but hubby likes them whole and boiled. The mustard greens are going in the ground tomorrow, the cukes are nice and green, the garlic is sprouting. I’m going to plant some Chinese peas and both climbing and bush beans, also all sorts of swiss chard. My jumbo jalapeno is struggling. My 7(?) pound tomato plant is planted. Poor thing it’s tall but no flowers. I’m going to trim it down and put it in a deeper pot, see what happens.

OH YUM !!! I’m going to copy you Red. I even have some polenta in the freezer waiting for the right time to use it and we’ll use it on Tuesday night. Thanks.

I have three blueberry plants. I think AUSTIN blue did the best, but the BRITE blue, and TIFF also did okay. Mine are in big smart pots with LC-1 potting/landscaping mix. I added espoma hollytone to acid up the soil in the spring. In the fall, they get half the amount of hollytone.

Also, I water them twice a day. I am trying to trick them into thinking they live in the East TX Piney Woods.

This Sunday I will be working on the Fruits of my Labors. Plans to make Hot Pepper Jelly, Roasted Tomato Sauce, Tomato Jelly and Oven-Dried Tomatoes, which are simply AWESOME!

I will be multi-taking; drinking a Bloody Mary (homemade tomato juice, of course!) while I accomplish the above and watching The Packers beat Da Bears!

Life Is Good! :)

Took my salsa pictures. Bowl is huge porcelain, had to put it on the floor to get a decent picture. Started with chopped outer flesh of romas, added onion, shishito peppers, poblano peppers, green onions, a chopped up fine zucchini, chopped up small bag of shredded carrots, a drained and rinsed can of black beans, about a cups worth of leftover sweet corn, celery. All my cilantro was done, gone to seed so I figure I'll add some fresh from the store when I want to add it to a jar.

This one shows the very thick, almost paste sauce I added, just enough to coat everything. Everything was mixed cold. I also added about 2/3 cup of white vinegar and salt. Sprinkled with ancho and chipotle dry spice and a sprinkle of cayenne. I pack the jars pretty tight, leaving the right head space. I find that putting in raw tomatos and processing for the 15 minutes will bring some liquid out of the tomatoes to make the whole jar looser but still thick and the tomato chunks are closer to the raw state. That's just how we like it.

Here's how it looks in a pint. Photobucket wants to show it sideways, sorry. photo salsa3.jpg

Your salsa is very photogenic. I bet it tastes as good as it looks, too.
I planted wa wa tsai, and some different types of lettuce today. Being lazy. I really should mow the backyard.

Thanks. Luckily hubby can still mow and I do all the weedwhacking. It’s been getting cooler here in west Michigan, mid 70’s. I should plant lettuce and radishes, if I could clean out the weeds. I took down fencing around the garden. The deer are busy eating corn now. Still have kraut to do next month, hope I can find the cabbage I want. Those big flat dutch heads are the best but they are getting scarce. Still have a good amount to harvest yet this year. I let the weeds go a few weeks ago and they are hiding the veggies. I planted some of those long Chinese green beans late and they have grown over most everything including a rosebush. I had them going up a section of fencing but that was not enough. The beans are just starting to form I should get a lot. We like them stir fried and served with any kind of Chinese long skinny noodle and a soy/sesame sauce.
