Well officer, my dog was attacking the bear. Realizing that I would be held liable if the bear was harmed, and facing federal charges, I grabbed my gun and attempted to shoot my dog. They were moving so fast, it was hard to get a clean shot, and I must have hit the bear.

Under Colorado law, Parks and Wildlife says residents are protected if they shoot and kill a bear to protect themselves, their home, car or livestock; but not if a bear is attacking a dog.
