Society has fallen.
last night | myself

Since when in America is it a right to hit someone's vehicle with a football??? If you move to Hartselle, Alabama it is a right here. Boys playing sports trump any kind of property rights (hitting vehicles and houses, breaking windows, tearing up people's lawns). And don't you dare say anything to the parent as their response is, "Our kids need to get out of the house away from video games and play sports." While I agree with that argument, they don't have to tear up people's property. Last night, I went to the father of a boy who hit my truck with a football thrown like a rocket. I made a sound like a blast. The ball hit pretty hard. The dad was on his way to work, so I was just going to let him know about the incident not take up his time. After telling the dad what happened, he yelled at me. "Did it do any damage?!?" he yelled. "No, not really," I replied. He screamed at me more, "Then what's the problem!?! Call the police!!!" This will never be resolved because no kid today ever does anything wrong. I expected that the father would say something like, "OK, I will have a talk with junior about not hitting cars." Instead, all I got was yelled at. My how society has fallen.

So apparently society fell a long time ago. We’d bounce footballs off of parked cars all the time, usually on accident (we were kids after all, not exactly the most accurate passers). I thought that’s why Nerf got invented, bounce of almost anything and not leave any damage. And the reaction of parents was pretty much what you experienced, if the kids didn’t actually break anything then nobody really cared, if they broke something we’ll pay for it. This was the basic plot line of most Dennis the Menace comics, it’s really nothing new.

The little old lady next door stood at the edge of the walk with a broom...guarding her lawn. As I walked by her house, I watched and when she turned her head, I'd quickly leave my footprint on her lawn.

At age, I made my first confession which included: "I stepped on Mrs. Cullian's lawn 500 times."

No, Hartselle is big into High School football but I don’t know that there is any field, besides the Football field which no one is allowed on, for them to play. No one else wants them to play in their yard either. It’s past time to move.

"Our kids need to get out of the house away from video games and play sports."

Yes, but they don't need to do it on someone else's private property without the owner's permission.

The point is, no parent thinks their kid ever does anything wrong. What was wrong about this was that I complained.

These kids broke another neighbor’s window playing with a real baseball. So, if the football that hit my truck last night, had hit the truck window instead of the side door, I have a shattered window... nice.

One incident does not prove that society has fallen. Yes, it has, indeed, but beware of finding confirmation for one’s theories in a limited set of events.

Was that your kid?

No, they are grown and have their own trucks to dent with footballs if they wish to do so.

And neither has ever brought about the end of society, so far as I know.

If the kid is playing football it's a good bet his father did too.

Brain concussions leading to erratic/violent behavior anyone?

read my page, this has been a way of life for 5 years now, and fake guns get people killed just ask the kid in Cleveland, OH, but you can’t cause he’s dead after being shot by a cop who thought his gun was real... Yes, society has fallen. No one takes responsibility for what they do anymore...

You’re certainly welcome.
Maybe the neighbor was having a bad day, and feels bad or embarrassed now.
In any event, let it go & keep the advice in your back pocket. You did nothing wrong.

The Art of Getting Along
Wilferd A. Peterson

Sooner or later people, if they are wise, discover that life is a mixture of good days and bad, victory and defeat, give and take.

They learn that a person’s size is often measured by the size of the thing it takes to get his or her goat. . . . that the conquest of petty irritations is vital to his or her success.

They learn that they who lose their temper usually lose.

They learn that carrying a chip on their shoulder is the quickest way to get into a fight.

They learn that buck-passing acts as a boomerang.

They learn that carrying tales and gossip about others is the easiest way to become unpopular.

They learn that everyone is human and that they can help to make the day happier for others by smiling and saying “Good morning!”

They learn that giving others a mental lift by showing appreciation and praise is the best way to lift their own spirits.

They learn that the world will not end when they fail or make an error; that there is always another day and another chance.

They learn that listening is frequently more important than talking, and that they can often make a friend by letting other people tell their troubles.

They learn that all people have burnt toast for breakfast now and then and that they shouldn’t let their grumbling get them down.

They learn that people are not any more difficult to get along with in one place than another and that “getting along” depends about ninety-eight percent on their own behavior.

I like kids to play instead of starring at an i-phone, I like to watch them. Life’s little pleasures. If it was me I would have moved my truck.
