Society has fallen.
last night | myself

Since when in America is it a right to hit someone's vehicle with a football??? If you move to Hartselle, Alabama it is a right here. Boys playing sports trump any kind of property rights (hitting vehicles and houses, breaking windows, tearing up people's lawns). And don't you dare say anything to the parent as their response is, "Our kids need to get out of the house away from video games and play sports." While I agree with that argument, they don't have to tear up people's property. Last night, I went to the father of a boy who hit my truck with a football thrown like a rocket. I made a sound like a blast. The ball hit pretty hard. The dad was on his way to work, so I was just going to let him know about the incident not take up his time. After telling the dad what happened, he yelled at me. "Did it do any damage?!?" he yelled. "No, not really," I replied. He screamed at me more, "Then what's the problem!?! Call the police!!!" This will never be resolved because no kid today ever does anything wrong. I expected that the father would say something like, "OK, I will have a talk with junior about not hitting cars." Instead, all I got was yelled at. My how society has fallen.

“Our kids need to get out of the house away from video games and play sports.”

Agreed.

That doesn’t give them a right to hit your car with a football, tear up your lawn, break your window, or do any other kind of damage. Isn’t there a nice ballfield somewhere where you can play?

(We used to sneak into the Little League field when the LL was not using it.)

Yes, society has fallen because some kid hit your truck with a football.
It’s in the Bible.

These are surely the end times, all is lost.

Make your time.

society has coarsened a great deal in the last fifty years! Many People have become blase and callous..and some have become just plain STUPID about it.

Society has fallen.

But your example of a father - on his way to work - inappropriately responding to a minor incident - is not a good example of how it has fallen.

Isaiah 3:12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

If the ball was under-inflated, you’d have grounds for a federal case.

Lob one of those onto “Burning Man” and you would do the world a favor.

Geez we play street baseball(tennis ball instead of a real baseball) and none of the parents complained. They were glad we were out of the house.

Every now and then I get reminded that a lot of Freepers watch the "HallMark" channel and are fans of Ceder Cove.

If you don’t want to do anything now, but the kid feels he has license now to act up and does the same thing or something similar ...
If it can be buffed out, talk to your insurer and see if they will pursue your deductible ($500?).
And Alabama may have a `parental liability’ statute. It may make the parents liable for actual damages and possibly trebles and your attorney fees. A lawyer might take a peanuts case like this if he thinks there’s a good possibility he will be paid/you will be reimbursed.
Sometimes the only way to get some peoples’ attention is through their wallets.

If they want to get really frisky, talk to the police. This may be `criminal mischief’ if the kid can be shown to have criminal intent, though what you described sounds like an accident.
I went through something similar. It didn’t stop until I dropped the hammer.

You know. We own 125 acres with 2000 sqft house, 2 barns, shop, ponds and creek, well house and cattle on it. We rent it to a couple Its 4 miles from robbers cave state park in SE oklahoma. We lve in high end okc suburb. More and more i’m becoming convinced it is time to just drop off the grid and live happily ever after. We have the means to do that in every way. I think the time is near.

I don’t think this is a good example. Back in the 70s my aunt would curse out anybody who dared say anything about her son no matter what he did. Some parents will cut you for talking about their kid. It’s always been thus.
