The half-hour special, set during the time period of the drama’s companion series, “Fear the Walking Dead”, chronicles a group of passengers facing a walker attack while in flight, reported Entertainment Weekly.

One character who survives that encounter will then join the cast of “Fear the Walking Dead” on season two.

The airline attack story will debut online, and will unfold in chapters that will air during “Walking Dead”s on-air telecasts.

Cool. I thought the first episode of fear was really strong. Acting, characters and pacing worked well. I roll my eyes at people who complained about slow zombie introduction. I thought it was just perfect timing. Hope the quality holds up, or even grows.

The interesting thing about “Fear the Walking Dead” so far is that while the story is based in present America, no one seems to have any knowledge about zombies, except maybe one nerdy kid. I think if I were to see dead people walking and eating folks, I would recognize them instantly as zombies.

"but the network never used such content to introduce a new character before they joined the show."

Interesting twist for a sequel.

I feel just the opposite.

After watching every episode of TWD, I thought the 1st episode of FTWD was very poorly acted and quite boring.

Different strokes for different folks :-)

“no one seems to have any knowledge about zombies....”

I’ve watched almost every episode of “The Walking Dead”. I don’t believe the word “zombie” has ever been uttered in that series. Different factions will have different names for them ,but as far as I recall no character has ever used the word “zombie”.

I think it was a little slow because most of it was about establishing the characters, hopefully this week will pick up the pace.

I read somewhere the excuse for that is in the world of the shows. “Zombies” were never invented. Thus the names Walkers and Biters.

Sounds like an expansion on the origin of “bicycle girl” webisodes...which were *very* cool.

Creator Robert Kirkman has previously said that The Walking Dead universe is an alternate reality where there were no George Romero-type zombie movies, so the characters have no frame of reference with what they are seeing.

Me too, but after I watched it over again I could really see these people as zombie apocalypse survivors.

They're just not very interesting as normal people.

Nope. They live in a world where George A. Romero never existed.

Well, keep rolling your eyes. The ratings of future episodes will tell the tale, but I, and others thought the first episode was pretty bad. The last half hour improved somewhat, but I was thinking that the teenage son could be like the old Star Trek campaign about Wesley Crusher - space the kid.

Well, it makes sense that in all of these zombie shows/movies/books the world would have no knowledge of zombie outbreaks. That is a big part of creating the sense of terror. If zombies started attacking in a world saturated with zombie media, people would probably react differently.

I thought it was strong too.

Some here will be disappointed. There are no Darryls in Los Angeles. Georgia has people that are survivalists, to one degree or another. Los Angeles is entirely full of people who are completely dependent on “the authorities”.

The one guy (Travis) was able to fix the sink by himself. As silly as that sounds, he probably has the greatest degree of independence in LA - and thus has the greatest survivalist instincts.

Here's an article about how the people in the world of The Walking Dead have no prior knowledge of zombies (no George Romero movies, etc.):

There was a pretty good zombie attack in an airliner in the movie "World War Z".
