Before he had even officially announced his run for the GOP presidential nomination, Donald Trump was talking up his plan to make Mexico pay to build a massive wall along its border with the United States.
They will pay for it because they have really ripped this country off, he said in an interview back in May. They have really taken advantage of us both economically and at the border. They will pay for that fence.
And his position has not changed in the months since. Just this week, speaking to Fox News Sean Hannity, Trump reiterated the claim, saying, Were not paying for it. You know how easy that is? Theyll probably just give us the money.
I watch politicians come on: Can you imagine, Sean, hes saying Mexicos going to pay? Theyll never pay. And Im saying, thats like a hundred percent, Trump added. Thats not like 98 percent. Sean, its a hundred percent theyre [going to] pay. And if they dont pay, well charge em a little tariff. Itll be paid. But we need the wall.
Well, now the Mexican government has spoken and their message is: Not so fast.
Of course its false, Eduardo Sanchez, a spokesperson for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto told Bloomberg in an interview last night. It reflects an enormous ignorance for what Mexico represents, and also the irresponsibility of the candidate whos saying it.
Mexicans in the U.S. work with passion, they do their jobs well, Sanchez added. His comments reflect an enormous lack of knowledge of the reality in the U.S.
Of course, this is not the first time the Mexican government has had to correct Trump. Following the candidates controversial comments about Mexican rapists, Mexicos Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong called the claims prejudiced and absurd and said Trump surely doesnt know the contributions made by migrants from practically every nation in the world, who have supported the development of the United States.
For years, I've been waiting for just ONE politician to say that very thing.
I’d love to see Mexico with a few million young men agitating for change bottled up down there.
Using us as a safety valve to export their poverty has to stop.
Brilliant! The reason many are in the U.S. is to bank their higher wages they make here in Mexican banks. It is not about sending money back home to mamma. After a couple of decades of this they move back and live like kings.
I would take it even further, once we make them pay for the wall, we can continue making them pay for all of the welfare and prison money that we have forked out for over 40 years to care for their indigent population.
The wall is estimated to cost $4m a mile (compared to Israel's $1.6m), for a total tab of $8b for a 2000 mile structure. Annual remittances to Mexico are $24b. A 5% tax will raise $1.2b a year at best. Probably a good idea to put up a remittance tax that expires when that $8b figure is reached.

This is a great way to put it. The US props up socialist and other failed governments as a safety valve. In the case of the latin countries, we get all of indigents and bottom feeders of the population and take that social pressure away from those failed governments.
In the case of Canada, we are a safety valve for their failed commie medical system. Canadians can easily come to the US and pay for medical care that either doesn’t exist in Canada or has a multi-year wait.
While the majority of the population in Canada is not happy about the medical system, they are not gathering pitchforks and torches because they can get what they need from the US if push comes to shove. However, Obamacare will put an end to this practice as our medical system is reduced to a pit of despair. In the end, the socialist medical systems will finally have to stand on their own and they will fail.
The White Elite want to keep their heads, that's why they are anxious to ship as many indigenous as possible to the US.
They must have Trump confused with Jeb Bush.
I say we don’t give them ANY aid. How outrageous is that? We’re giving them aid while they send millions here to live on public assistance? Insanity!

I usually take any government cost estimate and multiply it by 3.5 to get the true number. So it would probably cost closer to $30b but hey, that is peanuts compared to what we spend on other things!
Just tell Mexico that the US Army is headed south on October 1st, and they’ll voluntarily stop advancing when they come to wherever Mexico decides to build the wall. :)
Idiot author. It isn’t like Trump is sending them a bill. Just cut off the massive influx of illegals coming here and sending money back to Mexico and their government loses their #1 source of income. Even more than oil.
Thus they WILL be paying for a fence. One way or the other.
“The best wall”
I said years ago, how about a military base that stretches the entire length of the border?
Obviously, some of it would be long stretches roads. But heavily patrolled roads.
Slap a $5 charge on every Mexican entering the country legally.
Millitary that is..oh my.
Last time I checked we give Mexico about 1 billion in foreign aid. A penny here and a penny there adds up.

Have you really been here 5 years and not known these basics?
Come on El Cid you know that the alligators would end up as boots, belts and asada and Mexico would start illegally importing mutant shark tacos and make a killing. They would use the lasers on the Border Patrol.
Its like the idea of an electric fence....every home and business in Mexico would have a extension cord attached to it. Talk about free energy.
