Windows 10 Starts Charging For Missing Features
Forbes ^ | August 5, 2015 | by Gordon Kelly

Windows 10 splits opinions and it has split mine. I think Microsoft Microsoft nailed the core OS, but the policies around it are controlling and overly invasive. In short: great software, shame about the rules. And here’s another perfect example…

Now Windows 10 has launched, Microsoft is starting to fill in the blanks regarding features removed from Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Why? Because behind this free upgrade are the first signs of where Microsoft will start charging users in future and it begins at the very bottom:

They are handing the market to other technologies on a silver platter.

On an earlier Windows 10 thread I said we should be asking how Microsoft planned on monetizing it. . . here's one way they are going to monetize it.

Right you are. . . they are apps. Traditionally they have included means of playing such games with the OS and a means of playing a DVD. . . how limited is this? What does MS have in mind? Are they going to be in competition with companies who will build apps to do the same thing utilizing MS's OS? If so, Microsoft will have an advantage because they will know the hidden hooks in the OS.

does anyone remember the days when a customer bought a program for his/her computer and never had to pay another penny?

If you write the program correctly the first time, there is no need for endless updates.

as for viruses, worms, adware, malware simple solution: any computer geek caught writing such a program spends the rest of his/her life in the worst prison we can find.

I prefer the drawing and quartering approach to such punishment. . . then dicing and running them through a meat grinder. Then feed what's left to the hogs. Make sure they NEVER come back!

>>Glad I didn’t install it.<<

The return to Win 7 style interface compared to the gawdawful Win 8 tiles is worth it.

These little things will work themselves out soon enough.

"Microsoft will have an advantage because they will know the hidden hooks in the OS. "

Well, that's not a new competitive advantage used by M$. Excel certainly loads faster than Firefox in XP & Vista.

Games...media player....etc.

Plenty of options available out for free, and often times better than what MS provides.

A good and proper keel-hauling over a barnacle laden hull needs to be packed in there somewhere.
