I am reading Day of Jackal, I had read it 30 years ago but in my re-reading I have realized that France, even though unstable politically, was run by competent individuals interested in securing the history and legacy of France. Charles de Gaulle might have a autocratic and I am opposed to such, but he is miles ahead of Francois Holland. When did France turn the corner for the worse? Was it the 70s?
Also, 1968 and the student protests. Amazing how brainwashed those students were. They truly believe Mao was a hero.

Thanks Perdogg. They’re doing as well as can be expected, given their lack of political will, or rather, the intent of the long line of French politicians. Can’t build a single party state (see “The Managerial Revolution”) with law and order and fair elections.

The last decent frog was Charles Martel.
July 5th, 1962 wasn’t a good day for French national morale either.
They really started being rude to Americans after that!

Dien Bien Phu?
Apparently, at least on one occasion, he was also perceptive. A story went around that after fleeing to the UK, and in the midst of all the doom and gloom prevalent in late 1941, he was in a conference with a group of advisers.
The door burst open and an aide blurted out that America had been attacked at Pearl Harbor. Germany and Italy wouldn't declare war on us until Dec. 11, yet DeGaulle told them "We have won the war."
Stupefied, they asked him why, and he pointed out that Germany would soon declare war on the U.S. and that they would be drowned in America's military productivity.
DeGaulle was a good man.
I never did like the guy, but had great respect for him because he always put France first - and gave the rest of the allies a lot of heartburn. Too bad our side didn't do the same.
Then twenty years later those ingrate idiot students treated him like he was a Fascist.
