I just read about the Electoral College....
(Excerpt) Read more at Electoral College.org ...
If we were the United Federal State of America, then 1 person, 1 vote for President would be workable. But we’re not. 50 States need to (and do) have a voice in both the House and the Electoral College, based on their population. California is far more represented as a result of it’s population than Ohio or Montana, for example.
Are you an idiot? George McGovern won one state. He didn't become president. You cannot win the presidency by winning only one state.
If you want to abolish the EC, why not replace it with a system that would generate higher utility than popular voting, such as the Condorcet method?
If the electoral process still worked the way our founders intended, you wouldn’t be voting for Cruz, Clinton, Bush, Sanders, Walker, Trump or anyone else. You would be voting for somebody local that you trusted as a person of sound judgement. THAT person would then cast a vote in your behalf.
Yes, that’s true about the Electoral College. Hillary is going to lose to Walker.
By that, I meant California is not a swing state & everyone knows the Democrat will take it. So, you get nowhere near the attention, campaign commercials, mail, people knocking on doors, etc we get here in Ohio. Same with Texas - everyone knows the Republican will win so why worry about what Texas wants?
In that sense, Iowa & New Hampshire (primaries) & states like Ohio, Florida & Missouri rule presidential campaign season.
I wanted to be an electrician but it was too hard, so I went to Barber College instead.
I believe that one of the Greek city/states tried running a true democracy. The people got together and voted on every issue.
One day, they were having a big argument about whether cheddar cheese is better on a burger than American cheese and they voted on it and it was a dead-even tie.
And that’s how we got Swiss Burgers.
Yes I know.
The candidates come here only to raise money.
So depressing is out here, in the last presidential election, my daughter and I went our local GOP HQ to do some volunteer work. They had us making phone calls to voters out of state.
And I have no idea who voted to put mushrooms on a burger.
Probably a communist.
His point was that it could happen if the election were decided by popular vote. It can’t happen with the current Electoral College system.
Also, when you vote in the presidential election, you vote for the electors for a particular candidate, not the candidates themselves.
But I would explain to your daughter that the Electoral College is the only thing that makes this an election for President of the "United States" as opposed to "America".
The EC means that we have 50+ separate elections for that office ( should be only 50 but that's another topic ). In easy to understand terms it is loosely comparable to having the "World Series" versus a "Super Bowl".
A baseball team could have a 15-0 blowout in one game but still be in it from a best of 7 standpoint, but popular vote idjits want to count all the runs from all 7 games and decide the Series that way.
It would lead to even more massive voter fraud as they pad the popular vote in the big city liberal cesspools, but worst of all, it literally is a way to stealthily eliminate the several states, and create a stateless nation.
If the EC were abolished, the larger progressive populations of New York and California would rule forever.
I would say absolutely not.
I had questioned the wisdom of the Electoral College voting until I saw the USA Today County by County voting map for 2000 and 2004. The Electoral College vote demonstrates the founder's wisdom in a way that words could not.
It also illustrates the value of a Bicarmel Congress and exposes the basic flaw in questioning the founders wisdom by ratifying the 17th amendment.
I highly recommend your daughter, and perhaps you, read the Federalist Papers or better yet take the free on line courses offered by Hillsdale College. Your time will be well served.
That is a pretty shorthanded way to end up with the correct answer, isn’t it?
What he said
Some days I blather on and on. Others, I’m to the point. You caught me on A Good Day. :)
I think you might really be asking about delegates at the convention?
