The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
LOL. I’ll do that maybe next week. I’m low carbing to lose weight and get my blood pressure down. Every 10 lbs. down, I get to celebrate. This time I had some corn with lunch and some potato salad with supper 1/2 serving corn and 1/4 serving of potato salad.
Back on the plan today, but everytime I loose 10 lbs. I’ll have some more corn From the freezer of course. Butter and salt would be icing on the cake so to speak. LOL
Thanks so much for these posts. I’m learning a lot and the links are great.
Glad you are having some luck with some of your produce. First you get flooding then you get drought. Wouldn’t it be nice, if we all just got the amount we needed so that we never had to go out and water our gardens?
Yeh, when pigs fly that’ll be the day.LOL
Guess you had that tomato by now. I had to leave and get to town to get my errands done while there was still time.
Went looking for some beef spare ribs thinking I’d be able to also make some homemade bone broth while I was out and about. Would you believe that not a grocery in town had any? In fact there was no arm roast or chuck roast with a bone either.
The only thing that still had a bone was a Tbone or a Porterhouse steak. Fifteen bucks a lb. Even the beef ribs were country style without bones.
Wonder what they are doing with all the bones? I couldn’t believe it at first. They do have pigs feet and pigs tails and pig jowl.
I do hope you are able to get nanner going, but I’m not holding my breath. I think I heard something about rain in the forecast, but I really wasn’t listening that closely so I don’t know. Best of Luck.
Nice looking garlic!
I’m totally clueless about the balls. LOL Hope someone else has an answer.
Do you blanch your corn? Sometimes I freeze it husk and all straight out of the field - when I have room in the freezer.
I like to grow some potatoes, because I like to eat the skins. I won’t eat skins of supermarket potatoes, because I don’t have any idea what sort of pesticides might have been used.
They are also the perfect crop for me to plant usually. Nice day in April - we only have a few that time of the year- I plant them. Throw some straw on top of them and forget about them for a while.
Missouri rain takes care of the rest, and the straw usually keeps the weeds down. I was short on straw this year - should have shredded some newspaper, but then I wouldn’t have the volunteers. LOL
Those are lovely pictures. Thanks for sharing.
Wonder what’s going on with your corn, taters, and maters?
Is it the weather or some nutrient deficiency? It’s a puzzle to me.
Sounds like a great choice. I stick with the heirlooms for tomatoes. Once in a while Hubby plants some hybrids.
Picking blueberries, will take three weeks and multiple passes to get them all.
No I don’t blanche. With the vacuum Foodsaver and then freezing when I open up a bag it’s still super sweet. We do pretty small bags, just 2 or 3 servings each.
Just love that picture thanks. Was hoping you might post one. Extremely smart and cool.
Thank you for the link. I'm not going to try to save the seeds, I just wanted to be sure that it didn't mean the potatoes were uneatable. Have grown potatoes for a few years now and never had anything like this happen before.
Yes I’ve never seen it before either. Thanks for the live link.
I have turned into a cattle panel junkie. I have my cukes, indeterminate tomatoes, and cucuzza growing on them.I am guessing the cattle panels will outlast me. My greenhouse is made from cattle panels, too.
Hey, I have homemade peach ice cream churning away in my ice cream maker. I know it was a different thread, but IIRC, you mentioned getting an ice cream maker last week.
I’ve got some I no longer use. My vet told me he props them up at 45 degrees and lets his tomatoes grow up them and the fruit hangs out the backside. Maybe I’ll try that next year. My garden is not that big but I could have 2 panels in one long wall and plant the tomatoes, cukes, etc to all go up it. It must be less bending over.
How does that turn out? The wife and I have a mountain of corn just picked.
There are varieties that mature from 63 days to 92 days. I put in 63,75 and 90 and then do a second planting of 75 day a week later and that gives me four batches.
***I’ve got some I no longer use.***
Well they must be good for something.
