Nine-year-old Shreya Patel of Schaumburg will be among the young winners of Michelle Obamas healthy lunchtime challenge wholl get to dine with the first lady at the White House later this week.
Her garam masala quinoa burger with raita was chosen as the winning recipe entered from Illinois, winning her a spot at the awards luncheon Friday.
Entries had to be healthy, affordable and tasty.
Shreya wrote in an essay accompanying her entry that shes been cooking since she was 3 and said she loves to mix, measure, chop and even clean up afterwards.
Heres her recipe:

I can’t name you one, Mastador. A healthy sandwich that is tasty and satisfying doesn’t exist. What I am doing now is simply removing the bun and eating the meat/lettuce/tomato and onion. That way... I feel like I had something good and removed what isn’t good for me (the bread). :)
Wait, what? You are making decisions for yourself and not demanding that others change for you? ; )
LOL re your dogs.
When my kids were little and we spent some time vacationing at a mountain cabin, I tried making a soybean casserole from scratch, hoping to find a low-cost protein source. Followed the recipe, put all kinds of stuff into it ..spent an entire day making it.
Proudly presented it at dinner. NO WAY the kids would eat even one bite I threatened, pleaded, cajoled. NO WAY. So my son put his portion into the dog dish, one of those round ceramic dishes with the blue interiors. Dog trotted over, took one sniff, gave me a feeelthy look, then carefully lined up his shot, stuck his snout in the dish and WHAM, sent it sailing across the room into wall.
So I put it out on the terrace where our outdoor cats got fed. Next morning, it was still there untouched. So then I threw it over the edge onto a path frequented by wild critters. Next morning, most of it was gone.
Good work, Michelle. You’ll be disrupting family life for years and making our pets turn on us.
That’s funny! The dogs do look at you with a look on their faces, don’t they? A combination of disgust and sadness.. while they walk away and glance back at you.
I tried that Quinoa once and it tasted a combination of seeds and Cardboard. I tossed it out and headed out to In and Out Burgers. LOL
All right, settle down. Quinoa is a terrific alternative to wheat, rice, etc. It’s a great, gluten-free carb. We eat it with just mushrooms and butter at least once a week. It is a bit expensive, although you’re getting ripped off at $7.99 for a “small bag.” I think what we get is organic at Whole Foods (bulk), and it’s maybe $5.99/lb. I can’t say as I’ve ever heard of the above-mentioned preparation of it, and I certainly would never expect it to replace meat!
“What is that, a loofah?”
I’d rather have a hamburger and not get to dine with the America-hating arrogant witch.
Built by the Mooch, of course.
While I’m not a vegetarian myself, I have friends who are, and I’ve acquired a taste for meatless cuisine as an occasional treat.
This sounds tasty. I just can’t imagine it being much of a hit with anyone under the age of about 15 who wasn’t already crazy about Indian food.
Nice Visual.
Who outside of the Whole Foods crowd even knows how to pronounce that, seriously? It’s expensive grain, more expensive than hamburger for sure.
I wish moochelle was forced to eat some of the horrid meals they serve in our schools because of her!
All of society's ills can be directly or indirectly attributed to Liberalism.
I've heard it opined here once that:
Most human problems can be solved with an appropriate charge of high explosives.
Hipster Douchebag #2: "No Problem."
Just looked at the recipe. Sounds more like a variation on falafel.
I actually like quinoa but it is not cheap. I did get a bag at Aldis a few weeks ago for about $5 but haven’t used any of it yet.
It can be bitter so even if the package says it has been washed already go ahead and rinse it. I put it in a bowl with bottled water and let it soak a few minutes before scooping it out with a stainer to the pan to cook with new water. I can’t recall how I have made it in the past but I think I put in a small amount of sugar and vinegar and lots of butter. Probably onion powder, white pepper and onions.
I wouldn’t want to make a “burger” out of it.
