Confederate flag best remembered as racist provocation and emblem of totalitarian values
National Post ^ | June 30, 2015 | Colby Cosh

Does anyone else find it odd that the latest U.S. mass-killing rampage somehow morphed almost immediately into a controversy over a flag? Even the push-button liberal machine for promoting gun control, which usually kicks into gear very quickly after events like the nine murders at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston, S.C., briefly got distracted this time before eventually finding its feet.

America is in an unusually race-sensitive mode right now, even by its own standards, and one is inclined to suspect that the so-called “Confederate flag” took over the discussion largely because of the recent Civil War consciousness-raising by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is the big star amongst black American intellectuals at the moment. Coates has been, as much out of curiosity as anything — there is no non-clichéd way to say this — forcing a nation to confront its deep past in unfamiliar ways.

The U.S. Civil War is the definitive piece of unfinished historical business and the recurring cultural presence of the Confederate flag is a pretty good indicator of that. It is still pretty strange for a flag debate to arise from a mass murder. The killer who shot up a church meeting was attached to that flag, but, like many solitary Internet race theorists who hanker to become men of action, he would have worn, and did wear, any emblem that was capable of making anti-racists uncomfortable. If the Confederate flag is driven out of sight in American society tomorrow, the real-life trolls will come up with something else, a subtler, more adaptable visual code, the next day.

There’s a carnival setting up in our town’s market place park for this weekend. Across the street is a trailer and car with all sorts of flags on it. I’m gonna go buy one tomorrow. A nice one.

Emblem of totalitarian values, huh? Kinda like wanting to dig up a long dead Confederate general from his grave and move the grave out of town. And his wife, too.

Obama had a real problem with this church. They were not even thinking of rioting. Valerie had to think fast.

They needed a new anti whitey campaign.

Valerie glanced at the little monsters picture....The flag...that's it...

and the campaign began

It ought to fit right into the décor of the White Hut, then.

Whatever else the Confederate battle flag might represent, and represent positively with virtue and good reason, etc., that flag represents mostly an FU and middle finger to those who support the end of slavery, the end of segregation, and the treatment of black-skinned persons with equality and humanity and Christian decency.

Yes, it does stand for federalism and bravery and defending oneself from oppression and history, but to fly the rebel flag on public display in celebration and pride is, at the end of the day, an act of public indecency. It is impolite. Find some other symbol.

And yes, the recent uproar over the Confederate flag is a manufactured uproar, organized by the Alinsky left and carried out by the Progressive media. But let’s not take their bait on this one. Put the flag away and fly instead a flag of individual liberty, rule of law, property rights, free markets, and devotion to Christ our God.

I bought a bracelet with a large two inch cross on it and have been wearing it. I was surprised by how many friends and acquaintances actually reach for my arm and touch it as they profess to love it. They ask where I got it. (a Christian pharmacy) I don’t think it will be that simple to eliminate the Cross.

You can’t appease the left. They said give homosexuals civil unions because they want to visit in the hospital and we agreed. They demanded marriage in the state and we agreed, now they demand marriage in the country.

The left never stops demanding

Enough of this sideshow crap. They want to get rid of a historical artifact then fine. It is time to initiate a full-up push nationally to outlaw and shut down the democrat party.

They are the party of slavery, the KKK, and racism. They are the purveyors of racial hatred, and the only party directly responsible for the Confederacy, all of those “offensive” flags, as well as racial terror, subjugation, and slavery.

Why stop with the battle flag. That flag was a product of the democrat party as is the KKK, Jim Crow, etc. If the flag or monuments go then the party is the root symbol of racism.

A national movement to shut down the democrat party and to force them to pay reparations for the slavery they maintained and promoted as well as the racial terrorism and discrimination they promote to this day.

You couldn’t be more wrong! Every statement you made is flawed and represents your indoctrinated NORTHERN viewpoint and the viewpoint of people intent on causing strife and division where none exists.
In addition, Lee’s battle flag does NOT stand for Federalism! It stands for the battle to secure for all time STATES RIGHTS. Yankees represented Federalism. We see now the Federal Control over our very existence as human beings, and most of us don’t like it! I have ample reason to disrespect any demands to put away the Battle Flag because you claim it’s an act of INDECENCY, and PUBLIC INDECENCY at that. What I call indecency is the coloring of the White House with the GAY FLAG. GAY PRIDE PARADES are to me OUTRAGEOUS. There is nothing decent about “GAY
MARRIAGE” as it represents the elevation of sodomy to the highest state of human existence.Public Indecency has been eliminated by the Supreme Court. It doesn’t exist anymore, thanks to liberals who have destroyed this country. The battle flag is perhaps a portent of things to come and the liberals are afraid of it. It represents what this country used to be. Honorable and Christian, instead of Dishonorable and Satanist. I don’t intend to be “POLITE” to those who have destroyed the country I love.

You are trying to play both ends against the middle. You are trying to say, find another flag. What flag? It doesn’t exist! You are accusing the liberals while at the same time agreeing with them. You can’t have it both ways.

This is off topic, but the federalism term I used is equivalent to saying “strong states rights.”

During the years of the Constitutional debates, the so-called Federalists won the day over the so-called anti-Federalists (the subject of the WikiPedia link above).

At the Wikipedia article points out, correctly, the anti-Federalists (who wrote second, in response to the Federalists) were opposed to the RELATIVELY stronger power given to federal government by the Federalists.

As the term is used today, however, and in my post, “federalism” is synonymous with “strong states rights.”

I hope and pray you are right, but after what I saw last week I’m afraid anything may be possible, especially in the next 1.5 years.

MollyP... 1) I agree the rebel flag stands properly and positively for states’ rights. My use of the term “federalism” captures this “strong states’ rights” meaning.

2) Decorating the White House with the colors of the Gay Pride / LGBTQ movement is indecent, repulsive, etc. I agree. But this is off-topic.

3) You most certainly should NOT be polite, civil, pleasant, etc. with the activist Progressives, leftists, LGBTQ acivists, and their ignorant minions, and any member of the news media. All these people are loathesome scumbags. But this is OT.

4) You should be polite to those in the body public who eschew all the battles of right and left (while warning them politely to get off their ass and stop being suckers for the left).

5) I agree there is nothing decent about gay, but this is OT.

6) I’m sympathetic with your view that there is no other flag which represents all the same (decent) things which the rebel flag. But try coupling the Christian flag with the Gadsden flag. Yes, it’s imperfect.

7) My “indoctrinated northern viewpoint?” Come now.

8) Have a blessed day. I pray we can find some comfort while we wait for Christ to step in to sort out all this mess.

Yes, it does stand for federalism [sic; anti-federalism?] and bravery and defending oneself from oppression and history, but to fly the rebel flag on public display in celebration and pride is, at the end of the day, an act of public indecency. It is impolite. Find some other symbol.

Please help me to understand "where you are coming from" and what - exactly - it is you mean.

1. Are you advocating the passage of legislation to prohibit, fine, or otherwise regulate or sanction the flying of certain flags? If so, then what flags, exactly? The "Stars and Bars?" The "Confederate Battle Flag?" The Hammer and Sickle? The Half-Moon? The Mexican Flag. The "La Raza" Flag?

2. When did you come to this realization (that it is "an act of public indecency / impolite")? Would you - without prompting - honestly have made that same assessment five years ago, upon, e.g., accidentally catching a few seconds of a re-run of "The Dukes of Hazzard" or seeing a hippie traipsing down the street with a Confederate patch sewn to the butt of his jeans? What about fifteen years ago? 40 years ago?

Regards,

Go ahead. Put your flag away. You have that right.

But don’t presume you can tell me what flags I can fly or what symbols I hold sacred.

You sounds like a liberal - telling everybody else what to do.
