I went to every home game and some away games when The Big Red Machine and Pete Rose were in full force. I knew Pete somewhat, as everyone in Cincy did, and he NEVER gave less than 100%!! He would NEVER bet against himself.....Pete KNEW he was great and was looked up to, he would never take a fall.

The Rose apologists will stay on this, by saying he bets on the Reds to win. Meaning that he never had incentive to throw a game because he bets on his team to win, not to lose.

I’ve heard that there are big signs in every baseball locker room warning against gambling, and that every player has been in meetings where that is discussed. And that everybody knows the penalty is to be banned from baseball.

That’s probably true for most bets, but you’re looking at a potential collector item that might be worth money when that bettor was somebody like Pete Rose.

Yes, because he was just SOOOOOOOOO horrible! I mean, gambling on a sport! Now, I could see it had he beat his wife in an elevator, but then again, if he had done that, it would be a non-issue. Book him, Danno! Lol.

A couple comments:

First, I don’t really see much wrong with betting on your own team to win - you’re SUPPOSED to want it to win. The real trouble starts when you bet AGAINST your team.

Second, no matter which team Rose bet on, he broke the rules. He should be punished - but I’m just not sure that lifetime banishment for the (literally) greatest hitter in the game’s history is a just punishment. One could argue that his reputation has been forever damaged, and that he’s lost literally tens of millions in potential wages and endorsements because of what he did - many murderers get off with less than that, not to mention Wall Street embezzlers, inside traders, etc.

Third, this is a child’s game, so who REALLY cares that much. Oh, it is the one that I loved as a child, teen and young adult more than the others, and it has a storied place in US history, but it is JUST A KIDS GAME played by adults for big money. We do have more important things to deal with as a nation.

by saying he bets on the Reds to win.

Incorrect! We will say quit whining about a baseball player betting on baseball, period. Sure is a whole lotta whining about this. It's baseball. I spose had he beat his wife in an elevator, he wouldn't be facing this. And I don't even watch baseball!

I've said this here before. I have a family member who played for the Reds during the Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Sparky Anderson era. He got me a baseball signed by the entire Cincinnatti Reds.

EXCEPT Pete Rose. I don't care about the gambling. He refused to sign a baseball for a fellow player's family member. That's all I need to know about him.

The trouble starts when you start losing bets. Now you’re in debt to criminals. Criminals that might want you to fix games. He broke the big rule. And he lied and lied and lied. That’s why it’s correct he be banned for life.

While he was a great ball player his integrity for the game was crap.

Keep him out of the hall forever.

If Rose was black he would gave gotten a five game suspension, and the media outcry of “unfairness” would result in the suspension being reduced to two games.

Non sequiter.

Just because a thug football player commits a crime and gets away with it doesn't diminish Pete Rose's violation of a cardinal rule of baseball that has been published in every locker room since the 1919 Black Sox.

He should never be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He knew the rules and he broke them.

“The real trouble starts when you bet AGAINST your team.”

Or if you don’t bet every game. That’s the crux of the matter. How does managing to win affect the odds of winning the next game, when his bookies know he didn’t have a bet riding? Do you burn pitching when you know it is going to be needed in the next series when you know nothing is going to be riding? Or use players when they should have the day off in consideration of finishing strong down the stretch?

If you were a bookie making odds, would you pay attention to what games Rose bet on and which games he didn’t? How about when he bet 2000 bucks as opposed to 500? So then what do you do to reward Pete Rose for using your book? Because he’s a pretty sweet client and he knows it.

There are many ways to win and still lose the bet. It's called point-shaving. You can fail to cover the spread on the over-under. The team still wins for the season playoff, but the bet loses.

I don't know how baseball betting works, but it is possible for a team to win, and a bet against the team to also win.
