I went to every home game and some away games when The Big Red Machine and Pete Rose were in full force. I knew Pete somewhat, as everyone in Cincy did, and he NEVER gave less than 100%!! He would NEVER bet against himself.....Pete KNEW he was great and was looked up to, he would never take a fall.

The Rose apologists will stay on this, by saying he bets on the Reds to win. Meaning that he never had incentive to throw a game because he bets on his team to win, not to lose.

I’ve heard that there are big signs in every baseball locker room warning against gambling, and that every player has been in meetings where that is discussed. And that everybody knows the penalty is to be banned from baseball.

Yes, because he was just SOOOOOOOOO horrible! I mean, gambling on a sport! Now, I could see it had he beat his wife in an elevator, but then again, if he had done that, it would be a non-issue. Book him, Danno! Lol.

A couple comments:

First, I don’t really see much wrong with betting on your own team to win - you’re SUPPOSED to want it to win. The real trouble starts when you bet AGAINST your team.

Second, no matter which team Rose bet on, he broke the rules. He should be punished - but I’m just not sure that lifetime banishment for the (literally) greatest hitter in the game’s history is a just punishment. One could argue that his reputation has been forever damaged, and that he’s lost literally tens of millions in potential wages and endorsements because of what he did - many murderers get off with less than that, not to mention Wall Street embezzlers, inside traders, etc.

Third, this is a child’s game, so who REALLY cares that much. Oh, it is the one that I loved as a child, teen and young adult more than the others, and it has a storied place in US history, but it is JUST A KIDS GAME played by adults for big money. We do have more important things to deal with as a nation.

I've said this here before. I have a family member who played for the Reds during the Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Sparky Anderson era. He got me a baseball signed by the entire Cincinnatti Reds.

EXCEPT Pete Rose. I don't care about the gambling. He refused to sign a baseball for a fellow player's family member. That's all I need to know about him.

While he was a great ball player his integrity for the game was crap.

Keep him out of the hall forever.

He should never be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He knew the rules and he broke them.

1. This is a kids game. It is strictly entertainment.
It is neither less important nor more important in life than a family sitting around the table for a game of monopoly.

2. This was Forty years ago or more. Not only was it not of great importance at the time, many of the people it was important in any way to have grown old any dissemination died. Their little tempest in a teapot needs to die too.

3. In that era many of the players bet off the record. Back through the sixties the majority probably did. Big whoop. They generally bet on themselves and their friends to win.

4. Grow up. This level of acrimony over people paid huge sums to play children's games speaks of an enduring childishness that really grates on working people who adopted adult interests.

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Gambling was against the rules? Big, fat, hairy deal.

I'll never visit Cooperstown until MLB ends its vendetta against Pete Rose. The Baseball Hall of Fame has no legitimacy without Pete Rose as a member.

It's been long enough, and the hysterical bleating of the naive and mean-spirited purists has grown tiresome.

I guess these guys who juiced with steroids during the last 20 years belong in the HOF, because technically PED's weren't "against the rules" during that era?

Baseball is diminished without the presence of Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame. Period.

Proudly and Sincerely,

Pete Rose Apologist

Good. I figured if he was exonerated I would never again run into a HOF Rose at one of his numerous Las Vegas signings

I’m actually surprised they didn’t find this during the original investigation from the late 1980’s.

Simple question.. why is it wrong for him to bet on baseball... ?

if he bet on his own time to win...he betting on himself.. how is that a problem..he is pay to win by the team and by the bet...really do you want a player that would not bet on themselves to win?

And if he bet on a game he was not involved in..there no conflict.

only if he bet on the other team in a game he was part of would be a conflict of interest

Three months ago when Rose petitioned the commissioner for reinstatement I posted the article and posted my feelings towards Rose’s reinstatement.

“From the time he broke into the majors in 1963 until he retired in 1986, Rose amassed 4,256 hits (1st all- time), 746 doubles (2nd all-time) and 2,165 runs (fifth all-time). He played for three World Series Champions, and was named the MVP of the 1975 Series. Those are un-godly numbers. They are the numbers of a Hall of Famer.
Unfortunately, he also ignored Major League Baseball’s Rule 21 (d)

Rule 21 (d) is posted on the clubhouse door in every major league stadium, and has been for years. Rose probably walked by those signs 5,000 times during his career.

Rule 21 (d), which states: d) BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.

It doesn’t say... unless you’ve got 4000 hits or 700 home runs or won 300 games or have 3000 strike outs. It says ANY PLAYER....He chose to ignore the signs, he chose to bet on baseball, and he’s being punished in accordance with the rule. He also chose to lie about his actions for 14 years, and even after acknowledging them, still doesn’t seem to understand that his mistake wasn’t failing to apologize sooner. It’s that he bet on baseball in the first place. How gutless.”

Pete Rose in nothing but a punk. He will never be let in the Hall Of Fame. EVER.
