John Holdren, President Barack Obama’s top science and technology advisor, said at a White House summit on clean energy on Tuesday that a “global low-carbon economy” by the year 2050 means that “cars, trucks and planes” will be powered by “electricity, biofuels or hydrogen.”
“As we all know, a global low-carbon economy in 2050 is going to have to meet the energy needs of 9 or 10 billion people using technologies that will have to be more advanced than the technologies that are in place today,” he said. “Buildings, agriculture, machines must be dramatically more energy-efficient.”
“Cars, trucks and planes are going to have to run on electricity, biofuels or hydrogen,” Holdren said. "Electricity generation is going to need to come primarily from renewables and nuclear energy.” …

Completely unexpected.
You can never run a car on hydrogen in an efficient way. Simple thermodynamics tells us that it takes more energy to extract the hydrogen from water then the energy we can get from it. Electricity, aka batteries are the most inefficient source of power we have, and biofuels make as much sense as burning food for fuel.
These people are mad.

You are assuming that there will be that many people on the earth in 2050. The way I see it we will have an extermination before that.
I’m sure at some point Holdren will allow us to continue to use carbon based fuels if we kill off 5.5 billion people instead....hey, it’s six on one or half a dozen of another.

So... how are the electricity and hydrogen going to be produced, what is the fuel source for those?
And how much fuel will it require to grow all the biofuel, and how much land will that require to be cultivated?
Those planes are going to need really long extension cords.
All of them run on hydrogen now. That’s the hydro part of hydrocarbons.

And what, exactly, has this Administration done to push nuclear generation along?
Nuclear energy is the only viable future if they won’t let us burn petroleum. Nothing else provides the required power density to keep this civilization running.
