Fire ants invade North Texas with heavy rains
WFAA.com ^ | May 21, 2015 | Philip Townsend

The ants take turns walking on one another to stay out of the water and survive. They eventually build dense circles like the one Nathan captured on his phone.

"I was floored when I saw them," said Nathan's dad, Dwayne. "I had never seen anything like that."

My Dad was tending his garden. He got tired so he sat on the ground...right on a colony of fire ants.

Dad learned the hard way. Those ants are nasty.

I think the insurgent gubmint seeded the clouds above Texas a wee bit too much.

I admit I am rayciss against ants of the red hue.

10 months out of the year is sandals weather in TX, and those ants haunt me.

The photo screams “target rich environment”. Now is your only chance! Kill them; kill them all!

As if Texas doesn't have enough problems.

They are now in the OKC area, too. I have never seen them up here till this spring.
I went to my dad’s grave site in NW OKC on Memorial Day and there were mounds all over the cemetery.

I guess "the internet" never watched The Naked Jungle (with Charlton Heston).

And in strong contrast to the humans in the film loom the ants, the Marabunta.

With them, it’s all for one, and one for all. When they cannot cross a river, for example, they team up and carry leaves to the river's edge, using the plants as transportation, as rafts. And when they decide on a goal or a path, nothing can stand in their way. There is no contemplation of a single ant's needs, or individual flaws.

Fire ants invade North Texas with heavy rains

Fire ants brought the rain? But Bill Nye just got through saying it was global warming...

On the plus side, at least the fire ants didn't invade North Texas with tanks and armored personnel carriers.

Shortest period of time ever recorded is the time between when a fireant gets on you and the time it starts biting/stinging.

Whenever I’m working in the yard I keep a constant lookout for fire ants. I learned that the hard way. Great big blisters appear when I get stung. If I notice it right away I suck and suck and try to get as much poison out as possible. It actually works a little. Except when they bite my feet. I’m not that agile.

That was a great movie. Those ants seemed to think as one.

I HATE gardening here in TX! I’m also convinced that Amdro, etc. just makes them move to another location. Damn things never really die.

It will kill the mound that you treat, but after every rain, new mounds tend to pop up. A never-ending battle in the South.

I guess "the internet" never watched The Naked Jungle (with Charlton Heston).

I saw it and remember it well.......

And what I saw way back then was reinforced when I was in Panama and actually witnessed (almost stepping into) one of those giant caravans of leaf cutter ants.........talk about being totally creeped out!

I hate ants and will even break the law to kill them.......
