Ever noticed how tomato juice tastes better on a plane?
Cornell University researchers say there's a scientific reason for that.
While tomato juice isn't the most popular beverage at, say, restaurants or parties, people tend to order a lot of it while flying.
In 2008, German airliner Lufthansa revealed that 27% of its customers order tomato juice, but 23% of those said they never buy it on the ground.
Turns out, the stuff actually tastes better in the air thanks to a combination of noise pollution and umami, a Japanese term for the sweet, savory tastes produced by amino acids.
"Our study confirmed that in an environment of loud noise, our sense of taste is compromised. Interestingly, this was specific to sweet and umami tastes, with sweet taste inhibited and umami taste significantly enhanced," Robin Dando, assistant professor of food science at Cornell, said in a press release.
I wonder if this includes Mr & Mrs T’s Bloody Mary Mix. That’s what I drink on the plane......
And morning flights is just the mixer.
Tomato juice tastes best with vodka and a celery stick in the glass
Let me think about it.
Never noticed. Don’t care. Who paid for this “research “?
It’s hard to find a good brand. I tried yesterday.
The most popular brand is Campbell’s which tastes hideously like children’s tomato soup. V-8 and all of it’s variations are not tomato juice. And Glorietta, once terrific, hasn’t been around for 20 yeas.
i’m going to check Trader Joe’s!
Bloody Mary’s ... tomato juice.
Good ol’ Kroger branded tomato and vegetable juices are good.
I order it on a plane despite never drinking it otherwise. Seems like I can breathe better afterwards, the air’s not so stale. No idea why that is.
Kroger? We don’t have them here in LA.
Could it be a Ralph’s, or Von’s?
Sacramento is the best ever! I can’t find it either. Have to settle for Campbell’s. Add a twist of lime.
Lol!
Exactly! It is the vodka, splash of Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce and stick of celery. I made it a habit to have at least two-three at the New Orleans air port heading to Miami to catch a flight to Valenzuela when I was working down there. Damn good oil field pay checks.
Not sure who sells it there, but its part of the Smith’s product lineup. The thing you have to watch out for is added sugar in its various guises.
Just be wary of turbulence. I got off of a plane once looking like a stabbing victim
One hand, Tomato
Other hand, Salt Shaker
So that means a straw in the Vodka ?
Then swish and swallow ?
I can order it online but the shipping is expensive.
Campbells is so inferior that i barely drink tomato juice anymore.
Redneck’s theory:
Since the beverages are still free, people would tend to gravitate towards the premium ones, i.e. the genuine juices. Tomato would split a fanbase with orange, grapefruit, V-8 etc.

Well, that, and the reduced air pressure probably swells the taste buds a tad.
