Telegraph UK ^

Dame Shirley Bassey lives a solitary, almost mysterious life of luxurious semi-exile, earned over six decades of stardom, and sweetened by a rare ability to speak out when it matters. Ha, I saw a hockey player being interviewed once, he was a black guy from Canada. All the interviewer wanted to talk about was how unusual it was to be an “African-American” hockey player. The guy kept correcting him, saying “I’m Canadian”. It seemed like he had to say this about 10 times. The news man seemed completely flummoxed by this.

I am another big fan of Shirley Bassey

How can you compare her to Beyonce look at these

and

Just two of my favorites, for my money nobody has ever come close to Shirley. I know some say Barbra, Mariah. But they don’t have the stagecraft, presence , or the stature. She deserves to be a Royal Dame truly elegant.

Exactly. The hockey player was not operating according to the worldview that newsman had been indoctrinated(or brainwashed, a more accurate term) into.

The beauty of Youtube is you finally get to see the entertainer rather than just remember a voice and song........

"Goldfinger" is probably the most memorable title song of any movie I've ever watched........

Janis Joplin didn’t have to gyrate and stick her tongue out onstage either. She just relied on her singing talent combined with heart and soul.
She was a real talent but a mess in her private life. Can you even sing along to a Miley Cyrus tune?

Indeed.

Here’s one she did a year later for a James Bond imitation film called “The Liquidator”. It’s very “Goldfinger”-like in style.

I never cared much for Janis Joplin - she was way too frantic. My idea of sexy was The Ronettes.

They didn't show their bodies much, they didn't screech and jump around and draw their faces into contortions and get all sweaty, they just stood there, wiggled around just a little bit - as Jerry Lee would say - and were every teenage boy's fantasy. They had a poise and self-control that was very feminine and sexy.

Dusty Springfield was another like that.

I’m with Shirley on this.

I love that she wants to do the next Bond theme.

It has become ridiculous, just a runway competition to see who can have the highest side-slit in a dress, the lowest neckline, or the lowest waistline, or the sheerest, almost transparent material, etc., etc.

Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark were contemporaries of Shirley Bassey. They were ALL great, and they could all SING. Each lady had her own instantly-recognizable sound. Most of the current crop of singers sound the same to me.
