Baltimore Pastor: 'People in Public Housing Don't Really Feel Like That's Theirs'
CNS News ^ | 04/29/2015 | By Susan Jones

The Rev. Jamal Bryant, who gave a rousing eulogy at Freddie Gray's funeral, says Baltimore's poor people must make demands on themselves, not just on government.

"If you've ever rented a car, you'll notice, no time when you've rented a car did you ever take a rental car to the car wash. Why? Because you didn't feel like it was yours. As a consequence, so many people in public housing don't really feel like that's theirs," Bryant told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday

"And so we've got to do something in terms of home ownership, in terms of economic development, and small businesses thriving. This is a complete overhaul for the city of Baltimore."

Baltimore's public housing agency says it serves nearly 20,000 residents in approximately 11,000 units, including 28 family developments, 19 mixed population buildings, two senior buildings and at scattered sites throughout the city.

The housing agency's Office of Resident Services says it promotes "self-sufficiency and economic independence" through services such as job-search assistance and placements, social and health services, literacy education, job training, and youth activities." (For the record, the agency has declared June 2015 as "Empowerment Month.")

One of the more creative ideas I’ve heard in regard to public housing is to privatize it. Simply give the tenants deeds to their units and call them condos. The owners can buy and sell at market prices. They are responsible for those things typically assumed by condo owner and the management company is responsible for those things typically assumed by condo management companies. The federal government would auction off each development to interested parties. The level of maintenance would be determined by the condo fees and basically limited to leaky roofs, common plumbing, mowing and landscaping of common areas.

Amen. Any rental/service loaner I drive is treated like I borrowed it from a friend. No smoking or eating/drinking in the vehicle and always return it with a full tank of premium gas. I am also on the OCD side when I go out to eat. I refuse to trash out my table. I stack used plates, put empty sugar/sweetener packets on the plates and wipe up spills. Again, I am a temporary guest at the establishment, and should treat it with respect. I know, old-fashioned ideas that are sadly out of place in today’s society.

They would sell the condo, spend all the money in one day, then be right back on the streets demanding free housing. The media would report that they had to sell the condo to pay for medical bills.

It’s what they do in the UK.

Govt housing is an option to buy it cheap why not do the same here and lets see how the area works?

The Rev Bryant wants the poor to own public housing.

Ironically I didn’t see the word, “job,” anywhere in his rant.

I give him credit for taking the kids out to clean up the town and teach them responsibility.

I’ve taken a rental car to the car was because my actions caused to to be unusually dirty. The reverend doesn’t understand “good citizenship” - a problem obvious is plenty of people nowadays not just the colored folks

Maybe it is because they are not theirs.

LOL, I remember some of the homes in Brooklyn that were owned, all they needed was a coat of paint. My thoughts were, why doesn’t the city provide free paint and let the home owners do the painting. Then I though, great, they’d sell the paint to buy weed. Graffiti, urine in the halls, pot stench, all of which I remember from going into the city projects as an Allstate adjustor. Its not being the owner thing, its the being responsible thing. Neatness is personal, you can be poor and still maintain a nice home whether its owned or not. Spend a little time cleaning it and make it presentable. We all pay rent, in the form of a mortgage, just because the bank owns it doesn’t mean we have to turn it into an out house.

It aint genorosity.

At best, it is extortion. An implied threat that if you don't keep forking it over, Baltimore happens.

Realistically, you give it because you have a figurative gun to your head.

If I could push a button and every dime given to these vermin would get cut off that moment, not only would I push it without hesitation, I'd consider the action a good day's work.

I had an ex-boyfriend many moons ago who was a contractor. He would get contracts to refurbish apartments in the ghetto in upstate NY where I am from.

In all actuality, these were beautiful apartments. Well, could have been. Big, giant windows, wood floors, ornate wood trim throughout.

Every two years like clockwork, they were being refurbished. Because they were given to them and promptly destroyed.

“...like they feel _compelled_ to wreck things.”

Locusts come to mind. I’m always struck by the dichotomy in riot photos. A rioter may be standing on a police car for example...a car that amazingly is built from parts shipped from around the world and assembled into a technological gem...obviously a lot of work went into building it...and obviously the people of Baltimore spent a lot of their hard earned money to buy the car...

...and then here we have the idiot standing on top of it, all dented and destroyed. Does he not have even one introspective thought, one ounce of guilt, any shame at all that he is a destroyer and user - and will never be a maker?

I find it incredible.

Black wives matter. As long as family means nothing to black men nothing will change.

“And so we’ve got to do something in terms of home ownership, in terms of economic development, and small businesses thriving. This is a complete overhaul for the city of Baltimore.”

I hate to tell the good Reverend that the people are right. The property is not theirs its belongs to the Democrat plantation of which they are a deeded entity.

As far as thriving small businesses I think we saw a few of those go up in flames the other night. I’m sure CVS will immediately rebuild.

Though harsh in your post...

It has become extremely hard not to be harsh.

I came from Appalachian poverty.

So poor that I can remember my G-mother making a shirt for me out of flour sack cloth.

It was a damned good shirt, too.

But my dad moved us to the "big" city, after being discharged from the CCC, got a manual labor job with a construction company, learned eventually how to do construction stuff, so well and skillful to the point that to the day he died, people still asked for him.

He never got to the point that he could send me to college, but he sat me down and explained how I could go about doing for myself.

I took him at his word, he supported me every step of the way, and I did eventually earn a Bachelors and went on to a Masters.

I sent three of my children to college, all eventually earned Masters.

We all own our own homes and property, one is doing well enough to own two homes.

But I sometimes go back to the north Georgia cabin in the hills, visit my Grandmothers grave and go by the old home place and watch the old three room home slowly succumb to the ravages of time.

I count my blessings.

I did it...I have no doubt that an inner-city youth could do the same thing.

I'm tired of hearing about "white privilege" and the "1%" crap, keeping the poor black man down.

We spend trillions of dollars in some form of subsidy and all it does is keep them glued to the inner-city.

Send the illegals back home and seal the damned border, pay the young blacks (and whites) a decent wage and let them pick the oranges and lettuce and apples and whatever.

Teach them how to budget and save for tomorrow.

I'd rather pay 25 cents more per head of lettuce to give a youngster a decent wage, than see my tax money going to nothing more than maintaining a demeaning 'hood life.

Start a Civilian Conservation Corps, it was good enough for my daddy, and let them rebuild our aging state and national parks, start a Civilian Engineering Corps and let them rebuild our aging bridges and federal infrastructure.

Pay them a decent wage, teach them a skill that they can carry with them the rest of their lives.

But stop telling them how damned bad off they are and how hopeless their situation is.

I'm speaking rhetorically, of course.

I know it's not your fault or concern.

Okay, I'll put my soap box away.

Sometimes my fingers just go on and on by themselves.

I learned you need a kick in the ass sometime to get you on a straight path, I know, I think the time for being PC to some folks is over, they need to be scared straight.
