The Rev. Jamal Bryant, who gave a rousing eulogy at Freddie Gray's funeral, says Baltimore's poor people must make demands on themselves, not just on government.
"If you've ever rented a car, you'll notice, no time when you've rented a car did you ever take a rental car to the car wash. Why? Because you didn't feel like it was yours. As a consequence, so many people in public housing don't really feel like that's theirs," Bryant told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday
"And so we've got to do something in terms of home ownership, in terms of economic development, and small businesses thriving. This is a complete overhaul for the city of Baltimore."
Baltimore's public housing agency says it serves nearly 20,000 residents in approximately 11,000 units, including 28 family developments, 19 mixed population buildings, two senior buildings and at scattered sites throughout the city.
The housing agency's Office of Resident Services says it promotes "self-sufficiency and economic independence" through services such as job-search assistance and placements, social and health services, literacy education, job training, and youth activities." (For the record, the agency has declared June 2015 as "Empowerment Month.")

uhhh....because it’s not?
That’s true, as long as they understand that one must pay for private property with their own money that they acquired through work or other legal means.
What a great idea! Has that been tried before?
Yup-the first step on the way to Conservatism and accountability
And those voters always vote to increase property taxes with bonds and assessments.
Gimme, gimme that’s all you hear from them. Why don’t these bleeding hearts and black leaders start by getting them to go to school and get an education so they can own something (at least between them and the bank) They are receiving the equivalent of 35,000 dollars a year to do nothing but breed fatherless children that run the streets mugging, doing drugs, making more babies and killing. When they say Black Lives Matter why is it only directed at the police and not in their hood. Liberals have put the black community on a plantation and they don’t even realize it.
In the UK and Hong Kong - people in public housing have been given the option to buy it and turn them into co-ops. Obviously with the goal of encouraging responsibility and real family formation
So give them the public housing - and cut government ties to it.
Will that solve the problem?
Uh, duh. It isn’t theirs. And therein lies the problem — when you take public assistance the government owns you.
With the windows open...
“If you’ve ever rented a car, you’ll notice, no time when you’ve rented a car did you ever take a rental car to the car wash”
His analogy is akin to a hotel room. A car lease would be a more appropriate comparison to people in long term public housing. And people do wash those cars.
Yup. What he really meant was to give them the houses with no responsibility or obligation to pay for them.
don't worry ... is not widely known ....
I've got the solution! We just need to force mortgage companies to issue sub-par loans to people they know will never be able to pay them back. That'll fix EVERYTHING!
Ya. Unfortunately.
you’re Congressional material!
Uhhhh, we're just now recovering, 10 yrs later, over the last Sub-Prime Home Owner debacle!
When I was first learning about Sub-Prime loans, I thought it was a special low-interest loan for 1st time home buyers, but then I learned they were loans to Sub-Prime Customers who never should have qualified for mortgage in the 1st place.
Hence the problem with transfer payments - they truly become ENTITLMENTS.
When we can disconnect welfare from the “entitlement” mentality, and once again call it “assistance”, we will be a few steps closer to where we need to be.
Ultimately welfare should be defined/called what it actually is - a GIFT.
Just imagine what that would do to motivate some to get off the dole - to avoid the shame if nothing else: “Mama - did our GIFT arrive yet?”
“And so we’ve got to do something in terms of home ownership”
Ya want a solution, or just continue wallowing in the problem?
Solution:
Go to http://zillow.com and search your state for lots/land up to $5000.
Go to http://campingworld.com and search for popup campers up to $10,000.
Go to http://homedepot.com and search for sheds up to $10,000.
Mix & match accordingly.
Yes, it’s not a great solution - but now you’re a homeowner for under $15,000. That’s just $15/day for 2.75 years.
Ah...that’s right...those agitating about the problem don’t want a solution. Those who want a solution have already solved it, and don’t have the problem any more.
“Customers who never should have qualified for mortgage in the 1st place.”
That is lib/progs specialty.
I once owned a rental house in Detroit. I re-tiled the kitchen floor and literally the next day, the crack whore welfare rat tenant dragged a table across the floor and left a 1/2” wide gash the length of the kitchen.
It ain’t hers, why should she care?
I sold the house 2 weeks later to a true slumlord.
