If interested, check out the Pacer documentary posted down the thread. Good video, I thought.

Cars today do look alike but they look good.

We had a Gremlin and a Hornet in the family when I was a little kid. Not my parents (the old man refused to drive anything that was not a Ford or Mercury product), but my older siblings.

Tell ya what, those AMC vehicles were ugly as sin, but they were reliable. My brother with the Gremlin abused the heck out of it. It got so bad at the end that when he shifted into 3rd gear, you could see the road under the car and rocks would fly up from the holes in the rubber around the stick shift. The thing never once failed to start, though.

The Hornet was a bit more problematic, as it was a bit long in the tooth when another brother bought it off a guy for $125. Still, it served valiantly for another five years and two owners before we sent it off to the boneyard.

Now, a truly lousy car? My sister’s Vega. Oh my sweet lord. Nothing ever worked right on that thing. And they all seemed to rust in the exact same spot - right along the driver’s side fender.

My ‘73 went *everywhere*.

Nothing stopped it.

Not mud, not rocks, not ruts and ditches, not ice and snow.

Looked hideous, ran forever.

And it was fast.

My ex traded it on a Rabbit and the gremlin ended up at Eddie’s Salvage in WV.

Two weeks later, my mom saw a kid driving it on I81 S towards Martinsburg.

The odometer broke at 243K, years before.

Hope that kid enjoyed it as much as I did.

A female cousin of mine had a Levi's Edition Gremlin. Remember those? Most/all of the interior cloth was blue denim and had the little Levi's tag on the seats. It was kinda cool...might be still settin' around someplace, I oughta check into it. I hear they're worth good money.

Before someone yells at me, I know about Levi's gay agenda. Unheard of back then, (to my recollection), however.

And its siblings—the Pacer, Matador, Ambassador and Javelin. Strange times those, when Harley-Davidson was being run by AMF.

...and a few years later Jimmy Carter's "generic food" began showing up on grocery store shelves.

Strange times indeed.

Footnote, apparently they handle and hold the road far better than appearances...

That applies also to the Pacer.

_____________

Vegas rusted in the showroom.

I always wondered why people jacked up the back end of cars like that.

Then it was explained to me...

The car goes faster because it’s always going downhill.
