  • WinGPT is a new ChatGPT app for your ancient Windows 3.1 PC

    06/26/2023 10:21:26 PM PDT · by algore · 25 replies
Someone has created a ChatGPT app for Windows 3.1 PCs. WinGPT brings a very basic version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT responses into an app that can run on an ancient 386 chip. It’s built by the same mysterious developer behind Windle, a Wordle clone for Microsoft’s Windows 3.1 operating system. “I didn’t want my Gateway 4DX2-66 from 1993 to be left out of the AI revolution, so I built an AI Assistant for Windows 3.1, based on the OpenAI API,” says the developer in a Hacker News thread. WinGPT is written in C using Microsoft’s standard Windows API and connects to...

An anonymous developer has created a ChatGPT client for Windows 3.1, because some people like to keep one foot firmly in the past even as they explore the future. WinGPT was written in C, using the standard Windows API and compiled with Open Watcom v2. It runs on any 16-bit or 32-bit version of Windows from Windows 3.1 onward, so should get you all the way from Windows 95 to Windows 7 – including Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows XP. One proviso is that it won't run without Winsock – the dialup-era essential that teaches Windows how to speak...

Crisis Capacity Strategies... Implement limited re-use of facemasks... [familyop: No, just don't.] HCP use of homemade masks: In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.

As media allies idealize House speaker Nancy Pelosi and her congressional Democrats "shaping the future" on the cover of Rolling Stone, the reality in the Democrat-led Congress is quite a bit uglier. Roll Call reports that Democrats are in the midst of internecine warfare, fighting among themselves over the merest of legislative procedural moves called "motion to recommit," which permits dissenting voices to say something or maybe try to persuade for moderating amendments when extremely radical bills are presented in the House and headed to a vote. If nothing else, it's a desire to be heard. House minority Republicans use...

In the modern day gun world the semi-auto pistols have a huge hold of the market for self-defense guns. But concealed carry revolvers can still hold their own for personal defense. Revolvers can be a strong choice for concealed carry, as they’re reliable and easy to use. Not everyone is a fan of a small semi-auto for concealed carry. However, there is a large fan base of shooters that will only look to revolvers for concealed carry. If you’re in this group and interested in carrying a revolver for CCW, read on of the pros and con and see our...

Just thinking about the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy worked on an assembly line in a candy factory brings a smile to my face. Remembering the family spirit and wholesomeness of other shows like Father Knows Best, Leave It to Beaver, and The Donna Reed Show still warms my heart. These classic television programs made us laugh and cry without the sex and violence that is so commonly associated with television today. No wonder the interest in TV nostalgia is growing by leaps and bounds. Many of us enjoy revisiting the quality programs from the 50's, 60's, and 70's....

What is the Institute? A good question. It began as a repository for odd things I scanned - and by “scanned,” I mean I took pictures with a video camera, and used a frame grabber to get the images. Cheap scanners didn’t exist. As time went on, anything that was “vintage” or “retro” and could be gently mocked went into the Institute.

1911: Chester E. McDuffee’s patented diving suit The suit of Chester E. Macduffee is a fantastic suit to see. Although Macduffee patented 4 inventions and pictures of the actual diving suit are still available it is very strange nothing could be found about the inventor. In the book from Hermann Stelzner there are some references to Macduffee. The name of the inventor is often written in different ways. Stelzner calls him Macduff. He is also called McDuffie – MacDuffie – MacDuffy – Macduffie but the true name of the man was Macduffee. Stelzner wrote: Macduffs ADS was tested in 1915...

The DeLorean returns back from the future as a monster truck If Marty McFly and Doc Brown were ever to reunite for a sequel to Back to the Future III, the old time traveling DeLorean would need an upgrade of some sort to justify the ticket. How about adding 44-inch tires to a DeLorean and converting it into a monster truck? That'll do! While the DeLorean Motor Company is busy producing electric DeLoreans for a 2013 release, one DeLorean easily bested all others at the 2012 DeLorean Car Show & Convention in Orlando, Florida. What you have here is a...

Anti-Prostitution Posters, World War II Emphasizing the relationship between patriotism, morality, health preservation, and disease prevention, images of the infected soldier and disease-carrying prostitute in posters during the First and Second World Wars came to symbolize both moral failure and social decay. The following posters use images of "loose" women, patriotic iconography, and frightening symbols to grab the attention of the viewer and inspire behavior modification. These images not only reflected attitudes, values, and beliefs about the causes and consequences of venereal disease but also affected responses to the problem. (Note: Most these photos link back to Retronaut; added are...

Vintage CIA Training Videos Teach You To Stalk Like A Pro It's well known that the Jalopnik demographic is pretty much equally split between car enthusiasts and chronic stalkers. Today, thanks to our friends at Autominded, we have something that will make everyone happy. It's easy to forget that car following and trailing is a dying art. Thanks to easy-to-hide GPS tracking devices, this sort of skill is likely to vanish, like knowing how to make jodhpurs from a couple gophers or something. These videos, CIA-branded but shot in Britain and staffed with all British actors, both of the human...

25 Horribly Sexist Vintage Ads by Oral Adams Since the 50’s, a lot has changed in way of women’s rights and their duties in and out of the house. I highly doubt any company could get away with phrases like “The Chef [mixer] does everything but cook – that’s what wives are for!” nowadays. Or how about an ad agency pitching a company an idea of a wife bent over her husband’s knee as he prepares to spank her.
