LOL That was pretty much my reaction too.

And yes, it's a lot like joining the Borg. The idea of having to work harder and take extra steps to do what used to be the default, just pisses me off every time I have to do it. I'm building up a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine this week and it's the Windows 8 interface and you're just stuck with it, period. It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen on a server. It fights me every inch of the way, and in some instances, "you just can't get there from here".

Honest to God there are times when I recall Windows Server 2000 with joy and gratitude by comparison.

But some people love it. Good for them.

Very pleased to have you aboard! Win10 seems to have mellowed the kiddie block look somewhat, enough so that I don't find the result very annoying at all. Granted it's still not as slick and clean as I like, but then I tend to brain-damage my Windows user interfaces back into Win2000 look-alike mode...

I’m still disgusted about Win2000 Pro.

:D

I wonder if that was as bad as Vista. My daughter had that on a little laptop, and it was just awful.

I'm just a po' boy, so I haven't experienced every permutation of Windows. I started with 98 (which I loved), then moved to XP after we got new computers in '04 (which I loved even more). I finally moved to Win7 on a new box after the last of my old dinosaurs died on me.

I don't feel any need to upgrade right now, but support for 7 is going bye-bye. Oh well....I hope I'm as happy with Windows 10 as I was with the previous versions I've grown accustomed to.

They seem to be gearing it towards social media/movies/music.
It was too much “toy” for me.

I have stuff to do.

I hated having to slog through a whole bunch of second-guessing “suggestions” as to what I might be wanting.

I had an HP Envy 2-in-1 for about 3 days before I started screaming.

I wanted the graphic tablet features.

Took it back.

Bought a Cintiq 12WX.

I can plug it into anything running a really a sincere OS.

I *really* resent the move towards an OS that reminds me of Facebook crossed with an iPad.

And yes, I found out how to get to the real desktop but one wrong move...one slip of a pinky and *whoomp!*, there I was, back on Sesame Street again.

Don't despair. Support for Win7 is still available until 2020. What ended recently was the free phone support (which I never used anyway) and the addition of new features. Okay, fine by me, leave it like it is, it works fine for me now.

Microsoft will still be providing updates and security patches for another 5 years for Windows 7. Hang in there, it'll be okay. :)

Yeah, I have to ignore all that crap to get anything done. There are some settings that can make it better, though none that make it disappear.

> I hated having to slog through a whole bunch of second-guessing “suggestions” as to what I might be wanting.

Or worse, getting handed what they think you want when it's perfectly clear to a 2-yr-old that's not what you wanted...

That's a great move. Wacom makes very nice stuff. I had one of their tablet input devices a few years ago, gave it to my girlfriend at the time, never saw it again, but it was nice while it lasted...

It's like they are trying to channel AOL from the late 90's.

> And yes, I found out how to get to the real desktop but one wrong move...one slip of a pinky and *whoomp!*, there I was, back on Sesame Street again.

Yep. It's a thrill a minute.

I use Windows mostly out of necessity, not affection. There's a reason why my main machine at work is CentOS Linux (with a Win7 VM for Windows tasks), and my main machine at home is a Mac (with a Win7 VM, and a separate Win7 BootCamp (dual-boot) partition for when I need to devote the whole machine to Windows (not often, but...). Those operating systems are more productive for me most of the time, and I don't have to fight with them. But there are some things that Windows does better than the others, and I appreciate it for those things enough to make up for the frustration.

I gotta get to bed, I gotta wake up for work in 2-1/2 hours. Lovely chat, we'll continue another night. Ta-ta for now. :)

I’ve had the 15”, 17” and 18” Cintiqs.

They were too big and heavy to set on my lap.

Sold ‘em.

I have a bunch of Inutuos of varying sizes from the little one to 9” x 12” and get by with them but once in a while, I really need to work on the screen so the 12 was a better choice.

Then, for kicks, I got an old Fujitsu with Wacom technology to play with.

The max ram is a bottleneck but it’s still kinda cool.

Yes.

AOHell.

That’s exactly what it’s like.

I had a 30 day trial of that back in the mid-90s.

Then I ended up with Prodigy.

My old 28K modem really flew.

LOL

Nite!

Oh, no.

W2KPro was rock solid.

I had machines run for 2 years without a reformat on that OS.

Then the USB issues started and they went to WinME.

The horror.

The horror...

I have lots of Vista DVDs laying around.

Wonder if anyone would buy them?

[or my Win95 CD]

:D

Is it named Spartan because of its cheap, rugged efficiency or something?

I’d like to have a browser that had a button I could push that said “we’ll stop all that added crap you get from web pages you don’t want”. We won’t let any embedded video/audio clips load (we’ll load them into trash) and those popups will get put in a folder to trash spam the sender via Outlook after you log off.

Stuff like that. I don’t want Chrome Bars, Google bars, hints, instructions and twenty gazillion boxes popping up asking me if I’m sure I want to do that? I don’t wanna track my steps, heartbeats, blood pressure or mood, look at ways to save money, buy cheaper insurance or find a date.

Just the URL without all the crap. Can Spartan do that?

I find it funny, almost embarrassingly so, that people can’t adapt to W8. I think it’s great. It runs smoothly and I never have any crashes. I really don’t understand the mindset of “I hate Metro”.

I have 8.1 on my phone. I have 7 on an old Toshiba I restored when my even older Dell Vista-upgraded-to-8.1 died. I really miss the Dell, and the seamless transitions between phone and computer.

I actually got a white screen of death the other day on server2012r2. The screen was white and there was a single line of code up in the left-hand corner. I had to manually shutoff the machine to restart. Never saw that before.

You had good luck: 98, XP and 7!

Most of us had a struggle or two with the crap OS’s like ME and Vista.

Once Microsoft announced Windows 8 (and 8 only until they were forced to rerelease Windows 7 machines) I was overdue for as new computer (my old XP box was not up to my current processing needs) so I bought a mac, installed Windows 7 in a virtual machine and have been very happy.

My clients with Windows 8 are just so-so happy with their 8 machines. I avoid Windows 8 in all forms, personally.

Hoping your Windows 7 box lasts a long time!

I'll be honest -- I'm a Win 7 fan today. That could change after Win 10 comes out and I see what they've settled on.

I went from XP to Win 7 - am now hoping my computer lasts until Win 10 is here.

While Win 8 may be a decent OS once one gets past the GUI, I helped someone set up their new Win 8 machine and it took close to 6 hours for it to acquire all the updates even with a 50 Mb/sec connection. It also experienced issues of losing the USB keyboard when switching between users - I finally told it to troubleshoot the keyboard (that came with the machine) and it said it found an issue where USB communications might be lost when switching users and it was fixing it - took over an hour before it stopped working away. Evidently it addressed each user (2 users and one admin acct) separately and it had a lot to do to keep the error from recurring.

Not huge problems, but annoying - they can't wait to see if they get a free upgrade to Win 10 when it comes out.

Here's hoping for a return to happiness with Win 10....

Whoa... dude. I'm bringing up a 2012R2 machine -- I'll keep my eyes peeled.

It’s my opinion that MS focused too much on the “mobile” GUI aspect of Win8. This made it magically sucktastic for us desktop folks.

Downloaded Win10, but haven’t taken a look at it yet. Been hard into switch upgrades.
