Top Five Overrated Rifle Cartridges
NRA American Hunter ^ | 3/23/2015 | Philip Massaro

Posted on 03/23/2015 7:35:33 PM PDT by Blood of Tyrants

The myriad selection of rifle cartridges today has a metric ton of overlap, duplication, and some downright silly designs. Some of these designs boast wonderful claims, but not all of them measure up. In order to be overrated, you have to be rated at all, so that leaves some of the more obscure designs off the menu.

I’m well aware that I’m going to be taking a lot of flak for this article, no matter which cartridges I were to pick, so let me give you some details to start with. When you sit down to make your voodoo doll of me, you need to be as realistic as possible, I’m six feet tall, bald, blue eyes, and the goatee is graying. Accuracy counts in the voodoo-curse world as well.

That said, I have to pick five, and I know someone will come away with hurt feelings, but I’m going to throw caution to wind and do this anyway. “Overrated” is a tough term. It doesn’t mean that the cartridges I’m going to pick are bad, or even that they don’t work, it means that I feel that the glorification of them may not live up to the actual performance. Let’s roll.

It’s mediocre at best and takes no more skill than any other round.

Unlike the author, who has probably never shot one, the .220 Swift barrels will go about 2500-3000 rounds before losing their edge. He proved himself an idiot by stating it takes a longer action than a .22-250, so obviously he’s never owned one as they fit the same short action as a .22-250, .308, .243, etc. I have shot out three Swift barres personally, and if he thinks that burning 4-5 grains less powder makes a .22-250 last a lot longer, he is double an idiot. In reality, the Swift will push 55’s to 3900, the typical .22-250 goes about 3650, so there is a difference.

Neither has any real stopping power which is why Obama's attempts to ban it was a fu**ing joke.

Quite clever, really. If you can ban the smallest, the larger will come more easily.

But even the manufacturers call it a “varmint” round.

"Mankiller" was giving the PR folks fits.

The 5.56 doesn’t “tumble”. That is a falsehood that won’t die. It will, however, yaw and break apart when it hits a man.

Never have gotten M1 thumb. But right after I got my first one, I didn’t realize that the bolt would rest on the follower. I saw a speck of lint on the follower and put my index finger in to flick it away and WHAM! I sported a black fingernail for about 2 months.

Still the same... I am jealous. It’s on my list to find the right one for me.

The CMP is the place to get a Garand. They even offer rebuilt rifles with new stocks, new barrels, and refinished, properly gauged used parts.

22-250 is a great round. Still have my grandpa’s old Remington 700. Used to sit on his front porch and shoot varmints up on the hillside about a mile away. Never saw a weapon that shot straighter.

300 Weatherby is good enough for SpecOps snipers. 223 lays coyotes out from 300 yards. Don't hunt big gsme here with 223/5.56 - illegal.

Yup - everyone that has died from a 5.56 needs to get up and go about their business. Everybody knows it is garbage!!!

There are NATO spec cartridges. The 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and 9mm. The official SAAMI name is 5.56x45mm, 7.62x51mm, and 9x19mm. The bullet loads are .223, 308, and .355.

All respectively.

The soviets had 7.62x39 which loaded a .310 bullet. Nothing like the 7.62x51.

When a soldier refers to 7.62 they usually refer to the NATO spec cartridge.

Personally, I love the .60 caliber pistol round.

I'm a bit disappointed. I was hoping that was a well known FReeper and a Desert Eagle.
