CNN Anchor: ‘Our Rights Do Not Come From God’

During a heated discussion over gay marriage, CNN morning Anchor Chris Cuomo opined that the unalienable rights endowed to all Americans do not come from God.

Cuomo was debating Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. Near the end of the back-and-forth and after Moore argued that rights cannot be handed down by men, Cuomo blurted out:

“Our rights do not come from God, your honor, and you know that. They come from man... That’s your faith, that’s my faith, but that’s not our country. Our laws come from collective agreement and compromise.”

I watched it too. I usually have enough saved on my DVR to pass through the puff pieces on Fox, but I lost it this morning, so I decided to see what CNN had on.

I thought Judge Moore was great. It was a long segment.

All the rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights, by definition, come to us from our Creator, God if you will.

The signatories to the Declaration avoided any reasoned theological dispute, as among adherents to different nuances of Creation--or duties to God--by referring to the "Creator," as such. Whatever your theological view, the principle--i.e. that the legitimate function of Government is to secure the rights endowed by the Creator, to man in a natural state--is not dependent upon one's position on theological disputes as to the Creator's relation to man post Creation.

The compact theory of Government, as a rational consent to a particular Government, in common interest, is not dependent upon any of the theological questions that divide man in the pursuit of ultimate truths.

I would suggest that your query, here, is a "red herring" as to the elemental point under discussion.

Again, please read the document in context (Declaration Of Independence). It will provide many useful arguments against the endless succession of abuses that originate in slogan spewing Leftists, who count on Americans being ignorant of the underlying issues.

Is his contention that the authors of the Delcaration meant “my unalienable Rights endowed to me by my Creator” as “the man and woman who created me endowed me with certain unalienable rights”?

What shocking ignorance. If they come from man, they are not rights at all. They’re just arbitrary “permissions”, to be granted or revoked by those in power, be they in the majority or no.

That's exactly right, which is why the Left is constantly revoking "outdated rights" that they don't believe in. But you just try and revoke one of their "rights" and see how "sacred" they suddenly become!

I won’t argue just to argue. That’s definitely a linchpin between the DOI and the Constitution and so you have a great point. I forgot about the preamble probably because I’m just not keen on infusing Christianity into our system of laws.

Isn’t it equally possible that they were using blessing as a generic term to say that liberty is just darn good?

Or rather that liberty is a blessing from God. Probably a little bit of both so point taken. I concede.

When I was a liberal I used to argue with other liberals - it was like talking to a lamp post and has over time made me slow of wit. It’s refreshing to talk with people who use facts. It’s true that you become who you hang around with. Hopefully some critical thinking skills will be reborn in me.
