On this day in 1968.

North Korea seized the USS Pueblo and accused the crew of spying. The crew was released 11 months later. NK, however, kept the vessel.

We should have forcibly taken it back.

I was home ported in Yokosuka and the families were there. Along with the ship they got all our reserve codes. A real disaster.

I have to review the history as to why we chose not to attack to retrieve the ship and crew. This was at the height of the Vietnam war; perhaps LBJ was afraid of restarting the Korean War if we did anything militarily in response?

We should have forcibly taken it back.

Or, at a minimum, once the crew was released, sunk it.

I remember this, and I even remember the numerous photos of sailors making a rude gesture while held captive by communists:

As a child, I thought the gesture was inappropriate. Now that I live under a communist president, one who frequently uses that gesture toward Americans who value freedom, I understand and thoroughly approve of the Hawaiian Good Luck sign - at least when directed toward communists.

Or at least sunk it after the crew was returned. And the USN tried (unsuccessfully) to court-martial the CO.

Anyone remember, wasn’t Commander Lloyd Bucher brought up for some disciplinary charges as a result of this incident? Something to the effect that he should not have surrendered the ship when he did???

1968 was a very tough year.

Tet Offensive in Vietnam

Russians clamping down in Europe

RFK and MLK assassinated.

Riots in US cities.

LBJ announced he wouldn’t run again.

Chicago riots at Dem. convention.

Those instances were taken off the top of my head. I’m sure I missed a few.

When it's directed towards Americans, it's the Hawaiian birth certificate sign.

The Navy ship I was on had enough explosive to blow the ship sky high if you know how to rig the ammo magazines correctly. I know, because I was the guy that was supposed to do it.

>> We should have forcibly taken it back.

Well, yeah, except that the chickensh!t puke-sucking ‘rat Lyndon Butthole Johnson was president, and he ordered “no direct action”.

Same as Jimmuh “pussycrat peanutboy” Carter when the Iranians took our embassy.

Same as Barack “Loves Me Some Mohammed” Craprat Obama, when his muslim brotherhood murdered our ambassador team in Benghazi.

... detect a pattern here?

It would make a fine movie in the future to have the ship secretly taken back from the Norks in the dead of night, with them waking up to find a giant rubber duckie in its place.
