I was at The Sands in Vegas one lunchtime. I met an attractive young woman eating lunch alone, so naturally I asked if I could join her. Turns out she was a “spokesmodel” who worked conventions and trade shows and the like. If she showed up at the poolside bar in a bathing suit they’d comp her for lunch. I looked around and there were a few more like her. So the Sands was paying for eyecandy to hang around.

Hey, it worked, I ate lunch at the pool bar more than once!

On the other hand, when me and my scruffy dusty camo’d pals showed up in the main casino after a day on the range, a Sands employee suggested that we go to a small bar out of the way in the back, for a free beer! They paid us to be out of sight.

Pizza Hut in Denton, Texas, gave us our pizzas one night, 1968. We'd been working the feedlot all day and were covered in smell. We smelled up the booths all around us so the manager said if we'd hurry he'd comp. No problem. It was amicable as we and the manager understood.
