From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Gad Zukes what has happened to the dollar?

Congradulations on your naked, nudist fig trees.
It looks like my wallet after I go shopping for groceries.
Officially, according to .gov sources we don't have inflation; however I find that vegetable gardening may become more than a 'Victory Garden' necessity. DO you get much fruit from the fig trees ?

I have a wonderful fig tree I grew from a planting that a FReeper sent me a few years ago. It has done well over the last 4-5 years. Two crops a year and abundant yields. That is until last years super freezing weather. It killed of all the above ground growth but it regrew from the roots up again over the spring and summer. The crop yield was skimpy this year. I am trying to protect the new growth to help it through this winter.

Compost is always good for a raised bed “IF” it is real compost and not sawdust...

I have a houseplant that was given to me when my mother died in 1997. I have had to cut it way down several times, but it still thrives.

Isn’t that amazing how some plants hang in there despite all odds? I think in the case of plants from a memorial service, they give such comfort they just do try to last longer because we need them so after a while!

Ihave a couple of fig plants in syrup pots, hopefully they will return when the weather warms. The mini fig is in the garage, but am thinking of bringing it into the house. It’s cold in the garage. When visiting So Texas, we went shopping in one of the most interesting, dirtiest hardware store, I’ve ever entered. They had EVERYTHING, birds, fish, food for them, all sorts of hardware, and packets of seeds. I found one that said the tomatoes could weigh 7 pounds...so....being the fish after bait, I bought a packet, oh and a wide brimmed Mexican straw hat.

In-laws spotted a rarely-seen (for Red Hampshire) mountain lion in a field across the street from our house about thirty minutes ago.

I managed to get a few things accomplished over the weekend.

Trimmed half a dozen of my orchard trees. One of my peach trees is looking rather dead, which is disappointing. I won’t know for sure until spring, but I’ll be surprised if it buds out at all.

Brought home a load of stall sweepings from the neighbor lady’s stable yesterday. I’m going to plan better next time and get a dump trailer from the rental place. Unloading by hand a 16x7 trailer that’s piled four foot deep with poo isn’t much fun.

I took advantage of the frozen ground and started moving the pile of dirt that I’ve taken out of the pond to its permanent resting place in a big sippy hole at the edge of my woods. The pile was frozen a little over a foot deep at the surface, which made opening the first cut a bit difficult, but once I got it started the soil was in great condition for what I have to do to get rid of it. It’s about a fifteen foot drop from grade to the bottom of the sippy hole, so I pull up to the edge and dump. After awhile the heap gets up to grade and I pack it with the loader bucket and the landing area gradually builds from there. I’ve moved enough so far that now when I dump the tractor is sitting completely on material that came from the pile. Hopefully the cold weather will continue and I’ll be able to continue with the work. Once it warms up the landing that I’ve built will turn to muck and I’ll be out of business until dry weather gets here.

SpinnerWebb, I bought six pineberries plants from Burpee last year and they produced over 1500 suckers. I planted 1000 of them in September and passed on the others to a friend that farms. The few berries that were produced this spring, were out of this world delicious. I am hoping to make a big splash this year at the market, I just don’t know how to price them.

Thanks for the update. I just ordered 6 plants for myself. We’ll see how they do.

Happy Gardening!

Picked up a new batch of veggie seeds, and have ordered some new ghost chili seeds for this coming season. Already planning on a very small greenhouse, and gearing up to build my containers. Going to be an interesting season this year, as I have some tobacco I want to grow (I quit smoking after 25 years last year, but I’m still gonna grow it for barter, etc.) and I’m planting a couple hops plants as well. Looking forward to spring!!! My wife thinks I’m a little nuts when I get to talking about what I’m growing this year. “There’s still snow on the ground!” She says...

I was out setting Mole traps today and noticed my Garlic looks like it could use some fertilizer. I’ll take some photos tomorrow. The moles are digging in three different areas of the yard and I though I caught them all last year…
