Stonehenge by bicycle in 1965. Forty miles from Cricklade on Sunday afternoon. Well worth the effort, no fence, was able to roam around the rocks. Scenic hilly surrounding area with no visible residents. Learned later that it had been a WWll bombing training range.

Myrtle Beach, of course my personal idea of a vacation is to get AWAY from mobs of people.

A bunch of idiots. I liked 4 out of 5 for sure. Ok Stonehenge is a bit underwhelming but I sure as hell glad I went. I absolutely loved Hollywood. Very exciting city. Paris is incredibly fun and interesting. The Pyramids I absolutely loved them. I went down into them in fact. Rode a camel and did all kinds of things. What a dump person this creeper is.

The ancient city of Petra, Jordan was on my “Bucket List” for years, until I did a little research.

It seems that hapless, emaciated donkeys are used to ferry the tourists through the site, and they are treated very cruelly by the locals. I’m not a crazy fanatic about animal rights, but I can’t stand cruelty and abuse.

I crossed it off my list.

I’ve been to all those places except Stonehenge. I only agree with LA. I love Venice and always rent an apartment when I travel there. I’ve never had a bad experience in Paris. I lived in Dubai for 2 years and found lots of places that weren’t malls or slums.

My worst place is a toss up between Midland, Texas and Luanda, Angola. Midland is hot, smelly and flat with undrinkable water and lousy food and nothing to do and filled with bigoted hicks. Angola is the same except the Angolan are pretty nice except the ones working for the government shaking you down for cash at the airport. ROC next door I liked a lot better. Republic of Congo is safer, friendlier and has good food.

Interesting perspective. I've been to many of these places that I thoroughly enjoyed, but that was a long time ago. Things change. Even so, being a surfer who was young and single made Bali one of my favorite places of all time. Yeah, it's the third world and some people can't get over that fact, but I'd gladly do it again.

The pyramids at Giza were also memorable even though Cairo is a sewer. Back then, for the equivalent of about $5, the "guards" would let you climb the Menkaure pyramid. I'm sure they don't allow it any longer.

Finally, Stonehenge was well worth the time and effort (we cycled there) but, back then, you were free to roam the stones at your leisure.

I lived in the Los Angeles area for years and it is more of a hole today then it was decades ago.

We don’t do foreign travel anymore.

On rare road trips, we have done the following, and I highly recommend these places (especially for the budget conscious)

Spam Museum in Minnesota.

*Field of Dreams Movie Site (Dyersville, Iowa). the property has been sold, so this one I can’t vouch for anymore, but the kids had a blast watching the Ghost Players. And my son got to have a catch with his dad :-)

A Christmas Story House in Cleveland. Don’t shoot your eye out!

The Amana Colonies (Amana, Iowa). Great for biking, eating, handmade gifts and eagle-watching - go in the spring and avoid weekends.

LeClaire, Iowa. It’s right on the Mississippi. Buffalo Bill Museum and the original store of Antique Archeology (American Pickers). Had a tasty steak Sneaky Pete’s restaurant - but if you’re a guy, don’t wear a tie. A staffer will cut it off and hang it from their ceiling.

Midwest League Minor League Ballparks. We’ve seen them all. Friendliest staff & service was at Peoria Chiefs (do a day game - Peoria at night is sketchy). Best food, activities for the kids and other things to do in town, Quad Cities River Bandits top the list. Most fun with an opposing fanbase - Beloit Snappers. Still in touch with folks we met at Snappers games. Want to feel like you’re at an old-time ballgame? Clinton Lumberkings is your ticket. Was one of my favorite ballparks, until they stopped selling their mini-deep fried donuts. Worst ballpark, fanbase & experience - Burlington Bees. Of all the places we’ve been, I can find something nice to say about them all, except Burlington.

Safe travels to all FReepers!

I agree with Jamaica being a disappointment - dozens of people with their hand out contantly hounding women to braid hair and men for donations - not very enticing. Any number of Caribbean Islands are better.

I don’t agree with Vegas on the list, one poster complained about the Luxor after spending $50/night...really? You get what you pay for and you paid for nothing more than a campsite.

I’d recommend Boston over NYC every day of the week. Boston has character, NYC has concrete. Boston you can drive, great restaruants and sight seeing, rooms aren’t cheap but can be had for what you would expect.

Haven’t read all the replies yet, but.... I have to admit, I was disappointed in the Alamo. Well, not the Alamo itself, just the way it was sort of struggling to seem relevant amid all the modern surroundings. I know that’s true of so many historic places — we romanticize them — but still...
