For the past few years, 100-year-old rubber-like blocks from Indonesia have been mysteriously washing up on beaches in the UK and northern Europe. The Titanic has been suggested as one of the possible sources - but now a beachcomber says she may have solved the puzzle of the Tjipetir blocks.

That was the most interesting thing in the photo — and one reason I chose that one to post.

As recently as 1980 gutta percha was still being used in dentistry to fill the hole left in one’s jaw after a root canal ream job. Nowadays they may use something else, or as in my case, they remove the whole tooth, implant a titanium post and mount a new ceramic tooth on it. Sans problem. Sans a bunch of $$$, too.

Gutta percha is in widespread use today. Not sure what you think happened in 1980.
But the success of titanium dental implants does make for a sound alternative to root canal. I hope yours is successful and serves you well for decades.

1980 was when I left my job in the dental equipment manufacturing industry and went full-time in what had previously been a weekend hobby; auctioneering. Since then I’ve lost touch.

I wonder what they are trying to salvage from the Miyazaki Maru? It must be quite valuable.

Thanks for posting this.
Reminded me of a 1992 article I read where a container ship lost some cargo during a storm. The containers, filled with sneakers, broke open and strewed the contents far are wide.
Oceanographers were ecstatic and tracked the current flows via those Nikes.
