New Jersey Hiker Photographed Bear Before It Killed Him

Police in West Milford have released five photos taken by 22-year-old Darsh Patel before he was killed by the 300-pound black bear while hiking with four friends in the Apshawa Preserve.
The photos show the bear behind a fallen tree in the woods. Investigators say the phone was found with puncture marks from the bear.

West Milford police and the state Environmental Protection Department said last month that the bear did not seem interested in food and exhibited “stalking type behavior.”

and in New York state, a bear killed a 5-month-old girl in 2002 after knocking her out of a stroller and dragging her into the woods of the Catskills Mountains.

Few bears in Jersey are afraid of humans because they get fed (on purpose or by garbage cans) and they know the State Legislature will protect them from being hunted.

This thread is a total setup for glib comments but being killed by a bear is a horrible way to go. I know two men who were attacked by brown bears in SE Alaska - one survived with terrible facial scars and the other was eaten. The search party found his head for his wife to identify. Not funny at all.
