Bugs reduce pollution, increase nutrition, and should seriously be considered as a food source: This is according to a UN report with University of Copenhagen contribitions by Victor Yakimov
What is nutritious, delicious, and has six legs? If we could collectively get over our disgust at the six legged critters, insects could become a staple of the human diet, along with fish, and other kinds of meat, a new UN report argues.
The Food and Agriculture organisation FAO hailed members of the insect world as an under-utilised resource, in the report which was released this Monday. By 2050, world population is slated to reach 9 billion, arable land is shrinking due to climate change, and oceans are increasingly overfished. Incorporating bugs into our diet could alleviate some of those problems, the report argues.
"Food we are currently consuming is artificially cheap. Negative environmental externalities aren't factored into food prices, and farm subsidies artificially lower prices. We are facing a crisis; if the price of meat was increased to reflect its true costs, people would be forced to consider alternative options.", says Afton Halloran, one of the paper's coauthors, a UCPH alumnus to the University Post.
I ain’t gonna eat bugs
Were the 9-11 attackers to have hit the U.N. building would we be as upset about it?
lobster, a very large undersea insect
It should be noted that for decades, the general assembly of the UN has consistently voted fried locusts to be its “favorite snack food.”
Other interesting facts about them.
Though many modern nations regularly have delegates with advanced university degrees, the average education of the general assembly is 5th grade.
UN security regularly confiscates weaponry from delegates, to include blow guns and darts, knives, guns, poisons and other weapons. But the biggest security problem is that some of the delegates regularly set fires on the carpeting, with intent to cook meals in pots on the floor.
The delegates generally have a fascination with fire, and solicit thousands of disposable lighters each year.
Because so many of the delegates are illiterate, special cartoon pamphlets are created to give them a pictorial illustration of complex subjects.
In voting for translation services, many times the use of drums for headphone communication has narrowly been defeated.
Nepotism is so firmly established that many delegates assume western nation ambassadors are also closely related to their nations political leaders.
A large majority of general assembly delegates believe that the Moon landing was just another Hollywood movie production.
Keep our bugs, diseases and busy body thoughts to yourselves.
I am willing to eat bugs everyday. Lobster and Crawfish. :-)
*your
What you will.
Make anything parmagiano it’ll taste good!
Insects and Peppermints.
I used almost that exact line at a restaurant in Guangzhou, China, except my exact words were: "thank you, no. I had beetles for lunch."
a lot of cultures eat insects, but if you check, the insects are not a major source of protein for these culture. Think pioneers eating grasshoppers, or Africans who eat “Flying ants” during the two week spawning season.
There is a big “taboo” aspect to eating. Unless you grind them up and add them to food, they simply won’t be eaten. And some religions will forbid eating them as non kosher/ non halal.
The dirty little secret is that cloned, GM factory meat will be the protein source of the future.
I accidentally ate chocolate-covered bumble bees at a party about 30 years ago. They were not labeled and I thought they were chocolate-covered almonds. I had about 5 before the hostess asked me how I liked the bumblebees. That 5th one took the longest to swallow. They really were pretty good when I didn’t know what they were. Have not had them since.
