When a man shooting a .500 Smith & Wesson pistol for the first time took aim at a target and fired, he wasn’t expecting the target to strike back, but it did. The result was a very quick and comical exit to the right once someone yelled at him to “Watch out. Move, move!” And move he did!
The incident happened earlier this month while a group of guys were enjoying a night out together with food and a campfire, and a little target practice.
“My brother, who is featured in the video, was shooting a .500 for the first time at a target placed against a tree,” Robert S. of Terre Haute, Indiana, told Jukin Media. “None of us thought that the result of hitting his target would cause that tree to come down.”
Who would? It was a clear case of the shooter hitting his target and the target trying to hit the shooter.
So he should let the tree fall on him?
Although I didn’t panic I must say that the first time I ever fired a weapon (Ft Knox,1969) was a very spooky experience.
...wasn’t much of a tree. Sapling, at best.
Don’t blame him for running, though.
I can personally attest to the fact that shooting an S&W 500 at a ripened watermelon that’s sitting about 10 yards downrange creates a fine watermelon salad.
Captured it on 10X slow-motion video - pieces of watermelon were raining down for quite a few seconds afterwards (at slowed-down playback speed, anyway).
As for thin trees acting as target backstops, well I’ll leave that to others...

I don’t like an exited person with a loaded gun running around like an idiot.
I would like to have an S&W .50 cal. but I can think of few real uses for it.
If I had one, I would download it to a bit more power than a .44 mag. A model 29 or Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag do not bother me but I really don’t want much more recoil.
It would make a good pickup truck gun, again with milder but still powerful hand loads.
Four months go by and an ice storm coated the trees. That ash snapped clean in two. Every grain of wood in the diameter where I had shot it had fractured and disconnected from each other. That one round had really cut the tree in two. It was almost as big around as a garbage can.
I have thought about the .500, and have fired one. I would probably obtain the .460 magnum, built on the same frame.
The major reason I would want one is that they are extremely well made revolvers. They have to be to give the performance that they do.
You could become a lumberjack?
Yes the .460, made on the same X frame should be a little more practical but still a little hot for me.
Of course I understand you could fire .454 Casull or .45 Colt in it also.
Like you, I would like to have one just to have such a fine revolver.
When I was just a kid in the early 60s, I ordered a Swedish Mauser and a hundred rounds of surplus ammo.
The cartridges had a very long 160 grain bullet. It was fmj with a round nose. The bullets were parallel sided. I took the rifle and some of those cartridges to my Uncles property. I could not find a tree large enough that those little 6.5s would not penetrate.
They left an exit hole only slightly larger than the entrance hole. I showed it to a couple of my friends and they were absolutely stunned by how well it penetrated.
I got a 30-30 last year and i wish I had gotten a 30-06
I thought the 30-30 was bigger
more deer have been killed with a 30-30 than any other caliber. great gun for brush and 100 yards, however, I have 2 30-06’s and their good.
I think he did great, no panic there, just moving fast to avoid the 20’ tree he shot down.
That pistol has a similar muzzle energy to a 30-06.
If you have ever gotten your hand slammed in a car door, that’s what it feels like to fire one of those.
First time for me was a 30-30 with no ear protection. Funny haha but I kept my cool.
I have a 30-06 military issue Springfield which I had the bolt machined to clear a scope, and had it put into a sport stock instead of that huge military stock. I also have a 760 Game Master in 30-06, which is so feather-light. They both kick like a mule, so a second shot is at least 15 seconds if I miss on the first. The 30-30 doesn't brag so hard on energy like the 30-06 and is a lot nicer to shoot. The 30-30 also tends to drop a deer immediately. The 30-06 tends to cause the deer to flinch if you didn't hit any bone. The deer will walk off or run and takes forever to bleed out. Small hole in and small hole out.
