Compound in cocoa found to reverse age-related memory loss

In case anyone needed another reason to love chocolate, a new study suggests that a natural compound found in cocoa, tea and some vegetables can reverse age-related memory loss.

The findings suggest that the compound increases connectivity and, subsequently, blood flow in a region of the brain critical to memory, the researchers said.

Researchers said that if a person had the memory of a typical 60-year-old at the beginning of the study, after three months, on average, that person’s memory would function more like a 30- or 40-year-old’s. The researchers also cautioned that more work is needed because of the study’s small sample size.

I hear the weekly chocolate ration has been increased from 30 to 20 grams!

Obola akbar!

Trying to do better with my eating habits Came across adding 1 tablespoon butter (grass fed) to my coffee with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (the good kind). Decided to add chocolate to it and read that the cacao needs to be 70% or higher. Well there went the dove chocolate. Look at the labels. . .if it has more in it than chocolate . . .then forget it. I struck oil in one grocery store that had Lindt chocolates on sale for $.85 for a large bar. I went into a frenzy when I saw 90% cacao and 95% cacao. I bought all of them. The check out gal thought I was crazy. Dark chocolate is rare in the stores in my neck of the woods. Usually the higher cacao is left on the shelf unless there are organic health food types shopping there. OK. . .so now into the concoction goes the chocolate. . .4 squares. My next addition is Coco Monkey to tone down the bitterness of the chocolate. Is this TMI for you? Thought I would share. Oh! You must put it in a blender. Watch out and don’t blend it too long or the heat will build inside the blender and you could have a mess on your hands. I find that the butter has made the difference from when I originally made the coffee. . . .it can sit around and get cold without separation.. . . . .

Hello?? It’s been sitting around since Christmas? That is almost criminal and definitely NOT lucid.

I have chocolate every evening, just a little bit. Chocolate keeps your serotonin levels high, of course, so you eat it sacrificially for those around you, even if you don’t think you should. And let’s not poo poo this study, please. Just because the chocolate company funded it doesn’t mean it is bad. It just means they want to share their good news.

Sometimes you can have it instead of dinner, if mom is not around. I think this study should win the authors the Nobel Peace Prize. Think i’ll nominate them.

Try collagen gelatin. . .the kind that goes in anything. . . hot or cold. Sugar is a killer for joints also. Have you tried some Food Grade DE?

I discovered Dr. Axe (draxe.com) during a Wellness Summit put on by WellnessMama.com Worth going to both sites.

Focus more on exercise and less on food. You already have good thoughts on which foods are beneficial. But you said nothing about exercise.

You add: butter + coconut oil + blended chocolate bars to your coffee? Not sure I follow the recipe, but if I lived where dark chocolate was rare, I’d MOVE. Life is too short.

I agree about the exercising. . .I’m trying to do better in that area, too. I was just adding food to your post. I am looking into the short burst exercises. Getting outside is great for everyone. . . . you know the Vitamin D thing! And everyone don’t forget to ditch the microwave :) but that is a thread in itself!!!!

Of course, you only have to eat 22 average size chocolate bars per day to get the dose needed for the memory-enhancing effect.

That’s a small price to pay!

Although read the labels closely because darker blends tend to be “dutch treated” , or alkalized, chocolate which manufactures out the cocoa butter and bitter taste but destroys up to 75 percent of the healthy nutrients in the process. At least that is my understanding of the Lindt method. I will be checking out 100% Ghiradelli in the future.

I have taken absolutely no supplements! Just walking 7 miles on the golf course during each round must have jacked up my natural production of beneficial things in my body. My heart rate is better, my blood sugar is lower, and my blood pressure is better, my hip joint pain is gone, and no more backaches! Ok..I do swallow one 10 mg Lisinopril each day.

My diet has lot of fish, shrimp, coconut oil, southern pecan pie, ground turkey meat, whole wheat Greek pita breads, Greek yogurt, sweet chili frozen chicken pieces, and McDonalds hamburgers. And of course any vegetable and fruits on sale.

Serious advice on exercise....avoid any hard exercise if you are over 40. Regular mild exercise such as walking 20-30 minutes is very beneficial.

I think they call the concoction the Bullet. . . .but I’ve added other ingredients. The dark chocolate in my neck of the woods is the cheap end with all the fructose and whatever. Dove is high end :) in our stores when it is there. ! I thought I was doing good having Amazon send me a monthly stash using the subscription for the Dark Dove with almonds. . . I read an article that changed my brand. Considering I am a recovering Hostess Ding Dongaholic I am just sharing that changing some of my ways has really helped.

That's nice, but do you have photographic memory induced by eating a pound of chocolate everyday? If not, your other accomplishes bore me. /s

Sounds like you are doing something right; however, I would take a look at the type of wheat you are ingesting. . .I read some articles where the GMO stuff is turning boys into girls. . .I saw a you tube about McDonald’s chicken mcnuggets and that ended it for me. Thanks for your advice. I pray a lot! I am starting to take whole food nutritious supplements because once again the good organic fruits and veggies aren’t in the grocery stores around here and my gardening skills are well. . . they aren’t.

hahaha..I would eat more chocolate if the king I like (Cadbury milk choc) was not so high in calories. And the plain chocolate is bitter and awful.

Thanks for the heads up on the process. All I can say is there really isn’t any sweetness to the 85 and 90% cocoa. I’ll continue my research on the chocolates . . .and if any of you are thinking, “this chick has too much time on her hands”. . .I don’t :)

I agree on organic foods are better for you. But regular exercise will overcome lot of bad eating. That has been my experience. Regular exercise helps boost metabolism, which helps keep weight in desirable range.
