A group of ultra-Orthodox passengers heading to Israel to celebrate the Jewish new year delayed an El Al flight out of JFK Airport, kvetching that they couldnt sit next to women because of religious reasons.(snip)
The Haredi travelers wouldnt sit unless they could trade their seats with other passengers, rankling the secular Jews on board the Tuesday night flight, according to Shalom Life.
I ended up sitting next to a man who jumped out of his seat the moment we had finished taking off and proceeded to stand in the aisle.
Other passengers recalled that the black-clad rabblerousers stood in the aisle, praying loudly and causing a scene and making it impossible for others to go to the bathroom.
That's what I've been wondering all along. A bit of a nuisance in flight or prefight, but surely it could be sorted out in ten minutes or so.
blinkin’ pharisees...
Well, at least they didn’t try to cut off her head. Somewhat annoying complaining we can deal with.
It should have been obvious at the gate... I wonder if it was two rival Haredi sects and they did not want to cooperate, though not being willing to put aside any of their holier-than-thouness. My guess is that while El Al would be glad to do seat planning to make this possible, i.e. group all male Haredi into a block, the ultimate responsibility is that of the customer to alert them of special needs. They can’t just be acting up in the air.
Yeah, you'd think. A general spirit of cooperativeness can make all sorts of "special needs" workable. Thinking of the configuration of a passenger airplane, it should have been possible for all men who needed to sit by men to do so, and everyone else to also sit, somewhere else.
You’d think El Al would have experienced this before and had learned how to accommodate around it.
They may have wanted to create a scene. It would have been pretty to tell the booking agent before buying their tickets?????
You could be right.
I was on a flight recently where my wife and I were seated in the first class cabin but not together. Whenn the passenger that was sitting next to her got on board I asked him if he would mind trading seats with me. He got a startled look on his face and beat feat to the flight attendant and complained. Shpe took care of us getting together later but his reason for not trading seats....he was frightened to sit on the left side of the plane.
It reads like some secular (or religious in a different manner) Jewish people thought this was a bridge too far, prompting the acting up.
There’s nothing in the bible calling for such segregation, but seeing how it might impact their conscience towards God, as a Christian man I would have been willing to sit as a buffer. But I have a good idea how they get under the skin of normal non Haredi Jews.
At any rate there are biblical rules for Jews about seats in which women during their period have sat, making it an additional interesting topic.
Leftophobia?
this is just nuts...some folks demand everything for them as if they are God
This is what you ultimately get with a religion of salvation by works.
The girl in the seat behind is not guilty.
these gals sang opera on the subway....
And Broadway Lion King folks took over this subway singing
Notice that she rides, amberlamps style.
It’s funny, I was gonna call her “Amber.” The original Amber Lamps girl was really hot.
