It reads like some secular (or religious in a different manner) Jewish people thought this was a bridge too far, prompting the acting up.
There’s nothing in the bible calling for such segregation, but seeing how it might impact their conscience towards God, as a Christian man I would have been willing to sit as a buffer. But I have a good idea how they get under the skin of normal non Haredi Jews.

This was purely a hyper-sensitive rendering of a rabbinical law against mixing sexes. Clearly they had no right to expect the airline to meet their self-imposed demands. Don’t let the door hit you in the tuchas on the way our gentlemen....
