Bush had an AF1 boarding incident where he was carrying the family dog and passed the Marines without saluting. He subsequently passed the dog to someone on the plane, marched back down the stairs, saluted, and marched back up again. But Bush respected both the military and the office, so that put him two steps up on Obie.
While you MAY have a point, as the POTUS, if you're going to return a salute, you do so in the proper manner......not with a styrofoam cup in your saluting hand......

well, not only will he “get away with it” but he (his minions) freaking posted the video of it. Obviously he (or his minions) don’t care.
They’re saluting the Office of the President of the United States of America, and the Commander in Chief of her military. The ‘person’ (and I use that term loosely in this case), is irrelevant.
I still empathize with those who have to salute.
Although, it reminds me of the (supposed) Voltaire quote, “I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.”.
Is there a way to save that video before the White Hut takes it down?
I don't consider it a gaffe at all but rather a legitimate attempt to return a proper salute while holding his dog in his arms.....
...and NOT returning a salute would have drawn the same criticism............
