Put a normal boy in the woods and the first thing they’ll do is pick up a stick. There’s a reason for that.

So based on the victim’s name, we can assume the bear liked Indian food.

The population of bears and other predators are growing rapidly. Even the CDOW is surprised by how many predators there are.

The liberals from cities banned historical spring bear hunting seasons, banned traditional bear / mtn. lion hunting practices, and have forced the vacating of grazing allotments from the 1800s [ cowboys and sheep herders would quietly resolve any harassing of their live stock ], and more.

"A modified SSS probably would be better."

SSS, as in shoot, shovel, and shut-up about a crazed suburban bear that needed to be dispatched for safety?

I was at the shooting range and a guy had a .560 S&W. He hunted a lot in Alaska(or so he said) and it was his back up bear gun. 4” barrel. Asked me if I wanted to shoot it. I did.

I’d rather be eaten by the bear.

If you’re any kind of FReeper at all, just carry a knife.

But in NJ, handguns are illegal.

Not really illegal, but a carry permit is darned near unobtainable to the unconnected. What part of "shall not be infringed" do they fail to comprehend?

Being armed is illegal in NJ pretty much.

Bear spray has NOT been shown to be effective against black bears (as opposed to brown bears). I’m pretty sure bear spray is illegal in NJ anyway.

They should have stayed together and attacked the bear by throwing rocks or whatever they could.

I have hiked Apshawaw many, many times. Bears are common and it’s not really remote at all. The trails pass by several backyards.

This really isn’t funny. Being killed by a bear is no fun, and it’s only because the enviro-wackos have been encouraging the growth and even reintroduction of formerly vanished predators to inhabited areas that this is happening.

And the bans on hunting many of these predators (especially mountain lions) has allowed them to become habituated to humans (i.e.; losing their fear of man).

Other than color, one distinguishing feature of the Florida black bear is that they don’t carry sun screen on their way to the beach...

“if this is an area which was known to see occasional bears...”

Black bear sightings are extremely common (almost daily) in the area where these folks were hiking. They were unprepared for the dangers of that locality and it cost one of them their life.

I grew up in the area, hiked through much of it especially the Appalachian Trail. Back then bears were seldom mentioned more than the usual “stay away from the cubs”. Apparently things have changed. Bear spray should be a minimum deterrent and the human population should be aware.

Perhaps the population is aware of the threat, but the victim is an Indian immigrant, more aware of tigers at home than bears here.
