PORTLAND, Ore. The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when its owners rushed him to a northwest Portland emergency animal hospital.
It was something he ate!
X-rays showed a stomach full of "a large quantity of foreign material." Nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer -- the dog had consumed 43 1/2 socks.
DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital spokeswoman Shawna Harch said it's perhaps the strangest case in the hospital's history

Her Kong is the only toy she has not completely demolished. The Kong may well be the best dog toy ever produced.
I have one that has lasted with a "Cujo" mixed breed, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, two chihuahuas, and one Pit Bull.
Plus being run over by my 54 inch cut mower on a regular basis.
Well worth the money I spent on it several years ago.

The great dane my daughter had actually destroyed several of the giant Kongs.

If they had not done the gastrotomy, that dog would have really been “hosed”.

It is well worth the money. She has two Kongs and a Kong bone. All perfectly OK. But the Kong ball and Frisbee did not do as well. I took them away until she quits chewing so much. She also has a Kong bone that squeaked for about half a day. The squeaker is still inside the bone and she loves that thing.
Tennis balls and rope toys, are a no-no.

There is supposed to be a thing called a Varsity ball that they claim can not be popped. Thoughts? I had gotten her a Jolly ball and she chewed the handle off it. Completely destroyed a soccer ball, and a football.
She chews when she gets nervous. Especially when the Viking Kitties(Also known as the Hostiles) come around.

What did she end up giving it to play with? My dog is getting better at having a soft mouth, but she has her moments.

Large sticks worked pretty well. He just chewed them up. He once had one next to me and lost it due to his poor vision them grabbed the leg of the ironing board I was leaning on and shook it. 165 pounds of lovable dog.

Maybe someone should put their clothes in a hamper.

Puppies, like human babies, will put all sorts of stuff in their mouths, but this dog was 3 years old.

I’ve been told not to trust the lab until she’s over 5 years old. She’s cute but a maniac. My guess is this poor Great Dane was either not getting enough to eat or not getting enough attention.

The cat we had before the current one was about 9 months old according to the shelter, when I first got him. For some reason, he would get my husband’s dirty white socks from the laundry room and carry them around for a while.
He did not bite the sock, and I never saw him do anything with the sock except walk, holding it by the toe as the rest of the sock dragged on the floor beneath him. This went on for about 2 months after I first brought him home.
