As he stepped out on stage last year to hawk his big TV comeback in front of advertisers, comedy great Robin Williams joked it was 'nice to have a job where the checks will clear.'
After making his name as the eccentric and beloved alien on 1970s TV hit Mork and Mindy, Robin transferred his attentions to Hollywood with a stream of box office hits.
But after acclaim and an Oscar, the movie career started to dry up and the actor signed up for CBS show The Crazy Ones, a small-screen comedy about a 'renowned and slightly unhinged' advertising genius/madman.
While undoubtedly a coup for the network - CBS President Nina Tassler called him 'the biggest get of the season, actually many seasons' and 'one of the defining comedy voices of our time' - Robin was quick to admit he took the gig for cash.
The star's off-the-cuff joke to the room of TV executives, it turned out, was not so funny - in fact, he was being serious. Behind the grin, Robin was dogged by 'serious money troubles' from two divorces that had prompted him to put a Napa home up for sale, and was struggling with depression.
In September 2013, Robin told Parade magazine: 'The idea of having a steady job is appealing. I have two [other] choices: go on the road doing stand-up, or do small, independent movies working almost for scale [minimum union pay].
'The movies are good, but a lot of times they dont even have distribution. There are bills to pay. My life has downsized, in a good way. Im selling the ranch up in Napa. I just cant afford it anymore.'

COD -- Divorced to Death
He should have shacked up with a spicy muchacha south of the border.
The lawyers don’t fight. They collude. The more money involved, the longer the case and the more they make.
Financial troubles —you realize that if a REPUBLICAN were Prez what an utter FIELD DAY the MSM would be having with this ?
You’d hear his POVERTY screamed 24/7.
Some People Work for a Living, some People Vote for a Living and some People Marry for a Living.
Robin’s mistake was getting Married a second time with no ironclad Pre-Nup.
I can’t stand people who can’t stand showbiz people.
What are the ratings for The Crazy Ones like? I tried watching it a couple of times and thought it was pretty lame.
If it’s assets aren’t cash, they may not be easily accessible. Try to sell a $28 million dollar villa and see how fast it gets snapped up. It isn’t all that clear on his liabilities, For example, although he owns the villa, he might still have a mortgage on it.
A good lawyer can get you out of a pre-nup.
A 3 month gig in Vegas would’ve solved his financial problems. Living in a big suite at a LV hotel IMO doesn’t qualify as “living on the road.”
Thusly, the “net worth” of 50-150 million.
Guess you haven’t been around too many Bizzer’s
Pre-nups can be thrown out by a judge right?
and California is a 50/50 state? The of course millions in alimony and child support.
and he got hit like this TWICE
ouch
It's already cancelled so most like the ratings weren't good.
I didn't think the show was so bad. Pretty typical sitcom fare though Williams was a plus.
I never liked his work, but I like Michael J. Fox and Sean Hayes (whose shows were on at the same time) even less.
I guess they could have remade Mork & Mindy...
Mork is now a child (they age backwards), Mindy is an old woman now and Robin Williams is the neighbor who likes her. But she is still technically a couple with the child...
Never mind.
That would be messed up.
I do not understand people like that. Possessions were the most mportant things in his life. Now, that is what is sad. I have known people who do not have much of anything but they are some of the happiest people I know. That is why I do not understand all this prosperity stuff. Possessions do not make a person, God does.
if she remarries he doesn’t.
i don’t know why, though.
Thank you for saying that.
Why? Some are not worth liking just like ordinary people.
