He’s cute, but it seems kind of cruel to me to make a pet out of a porcupine. There will always be some distance in such a relationship, which the poor porcupine cannot understand since he just wants to play.

The porcupine was rescued as a baby.
He didn't really have a chance in the wild. As far as his understanding, sometimes when a person only knows one thing, they don't know any other way. For this porcie, he probably doesn't know anything else. The interaction he gets, is all he knows, so he thinks that is normal.
